Our dog died today?

Hugs OP. Your dog was so lucky to have 17.5 years with your family. And your family got to love this pooch forever.

OP, I’m very sorry for your loss. That is just so sad. It’s beautiful that you and your family are taking so much time to go through this grief and comfort each other and pay tribute to your beloved dog. And yes, I do believe that all dogs go to heaven, and I’m just really sorry for your loss!

We went through something similar with our Westie on Dec. 23 a few years ago—talk about a horrible Christmas.

If it is any consolation, at all, just last night my dad and I were talking about the fact that we are thankful our Westie did not have a long period of being in pain, or confused, or weak and listless, like our cairn terrier did. We had two older dogs, and one had a long and slow process, and the other one died quickly after a brief illness. Looking back, having experienced it both ways, limited pain/illness was a blessing for our dog and for our family—no hard decisions, no difficult weeks, no bedtimes knowing she was in distress.

You did your best and loved and cared for your dog for his whole life. A good dog, a good family, a good life, and even a good grief in that you are allowing it to happen, supporting each other and honoring your beloved pet.

Big hugs, OP.
At least he didn't suffer for long. I hope memories of him make you smile every day.

I’m sorry OP. your post made me tear up. My 14 year old dog passed away in 2020 at the height of Covid. It was horrible and took a long time to accept he was really gone.

It's a devastating loss regardless of what anyone thinks. You need to feel free to grieve as long as you need to.

I'm sorry, OP.

I'm so sorry for your loss!

Growing up, we had a similar situation - I had a little dog for 16 years - totally a member of the family. When she died, I know it was so hard on my mom, especially, who worked from home - my Dad had to travel for work and my brother and I were both in college by then, so the little dog had been her daytime companion forever.

I'm glad you had such a joyful long time with your little dog, but it is a loss.

So sorry OP. We lost our 17 year old dog a couple years ago, and we knew the time was coming but had so much trouble deciding. Dogs can be stoic animals and you don’t know something is going on until they are very poorly. You just never know. Your pup was loved and knew it.
