DH makes $400k/year and is on the phone arguing with the gas company over $50

If it bothers your husband this much, maybe he should start a go-fund-me page.

I admire people who do this. They are such an annoyance to the company, they provide a spur to make companies put in controls to prevent such poor billing.

But I'm a free rider of their efforts. I would say I got off cheap for $50 and would let it go.

I agree with OP.
We only have a finite number of hours before life is over.
There is an opportunity cost to spending an hour on the phone haggling over $50.

Um…that’s normal. You shouldn’t have to pay something that you don’t owe.

DH is doing your dirty work. When my DH does this, I am grateful.

This is why your DH makes $400k/yr. Never scum suckers leech off you and nickel and dime you.

He can’t help it that the phone conversation is so inefficient. Let him go.

Do we really know whether or not the $50 charge is legitimate ?

My DH took on a pro bono case where he spent hundreds of hours of his free time arguing over a liability of his client's that was only a few hundred dollars. Winning the case led to a precedential opinion. It sends a message to big companies not to take advantage of consumers just because they can. The principle matters more than you realize.

I think he should go for it.

I spent 5 months getting money back from Amex and American Traffic Solutions for incorrectly charging me for a highway toll that I paid cash for -- and then charging me ANOTHER fee for every day of my rental, because there was a transponder in the rental car. This fee was charged every day of my trip for days I didn't drive on toll roads wasn't using the transponder and there was no way to remove the transponder from the rental car to prevent it from being scanned.

When I told Amex that they could deal with American Traffic Solutions on my behalf or lose me as a customer for the next 40 years, they refunded my money.

So, your husband? Yes. Get that money back.

Yes!

I'm the rental car poster. I believe it made a difference, because rental car companies changed how they do things. My assumption is that enough of us complained, and I know people were pissed because I found complaints about American Traffic Solutions on the internet. Horrible company.

He’s mad as hell and he’s not gonna take it anymore!

I just got a bill from Delaware for 80 bucks on an unpaid 50 cent toll (79.50 in penalties) from years ago for a car I didn’t own or drive from when I was nowhere near Delaware.

Op’s hubby has given me hope!

Also apparently DE has no way to enforce it but still pisses me off

Folks, call on your medical bills too. Pretty much all medical bills are negotiable. I managed to get $40,000 of medical bills down to around $9000. It took me about 2 hours on the phone. This was a number of phone calls had I had to call the hospital, doctors, labs etc all to get negotiated rates.

I called A/P at each location. I'd tell each phone answerer that we really could not afford the bill and what was the best price that they could give me.
