4th grade homework

Anonymous
My kid is in 5th now and so far gets less than she did in 4th. I would say in 4th she got anywhere from 15 mins to an hour a night. The hour long sessions were close to the beginning of the year and she was coming off a year of homeschool so getting back into the routine was a struggle.

This week for math, it's a 7-page review packet and a homework sheet each night.
This week for reading/writing, it's two sections on IXL a grade ahead, read a chapter book (DS's is about 400 pages), and write a draft of a book review. They did have some time to do homework at school.

We do as much over the weekend as we can. There are a lot of assignments that aren't due for several days, so DS is working on not procrastinating.

A light day is 30-40 minutes. When things are extra challenging, it's taken 2-3 hours. I'm hoping he gets into a groove and it gets easier/faster.

We're keeping after school activities light for now.

Public school in the Chicago suburbs.

Our school district decided to pretty much drop elementary school homework during the pandemic and to continue that to focus on family time / social and emotional health.

The expectation is 30 mins reading per night and my 4th grader is asked to practice multiplication facts at home regularly. She has the occasional math sheet (10-15 mins if that). There will be a social studies project that takes some work at home probably, but it’s longer term project, so easier to fit around other things. Thank goodness because her instrument, sport, friends, and orthodontia seem to take up a lot of time. I had HOURS of homework in 4th regularly. So glad that she does not!!

It depends on the school and the teacher.
