How do people make inexpensive clothing look expensive? Tips?

Learn to sew. You can fix up and upgrade even consignment store clothing.

Fit, fabrics, and good basics (shoes, bag, coat). The simpler the better.

Whenever people say things like this, I am always like…what century are you from? Good quality belt?! How often are you wearing belts?!?

The real answer is having well fitting clothing which correlates w/ being thin but curvy enough to see your waist through the clothing.

DP. I wear belts with anything I own that has belt loops - which is just about every pair of pants I own. If you’re not, you look unfinished/unpolished. That is the real answer.

I actually wear belts a lot with dresses.

You can also do this to some extent with hair and classic makeup

Also pattern and colors matter. The more neutral…the more classic and high end it will look.

People take this advice literally and just end up look poor or dull. Color is very important and neutral colors should just be a base.

Depending on the item it can help to change out the buttons for a better quality button.

+1, anything that pulls or pinches will look cheap. Oversized clothes don't so much look cheap as they make you look uncouth, but the effect is the same. Clothes should fit, especially in the shoulders, hips, waist, and to the correct hem. Spending $$ on tailoring, or taking the time to find the proper size or the brands that fit you best, is well worth it.

This is something I’d love to know also, how do you make the oversized sweater or blazer look nice? I feel like people either hit or miss in this season. But others completely nail an untucked oversized sweater or cardigan.

To nail it, the clothes have to be the right length, the sleeves have to be the right length, the shoulders should be where they are supposed to be, and the overall proportions must be right. Oversize <> sloppy.

You have to be picky. I have a few things from Target that do not look cheap in the slightest. I think most of their stuff sucks, though. If it fits well and it truly flatters you, that's most of the battle.

I like PP's examples of the Zara dress. Everyone should have a couple of great black dresses and black pairs of pants as a base.

How old are you?

Fit and fabric. Even expensive designer clothing can be crap quality. Cheap clothes that fit properly look better.

The people nailing an oversized anything are not busty.

Disagree. It can look good on anyone if you do strategic tucking. Like one side of the sweater is tucked into tight pants. I'm petite, big busted and make these styles work.

I will say that you might underestimate how much time people who you think look well dressed are putting into their appearances.
