National Merit Semifinalists

The awards are allocated by "state" and are based on where a kid attends school, not their home. Because of that, DC has the highest cutoff score in the country just about every year and so any public school kid that makes it on the list is really punching above their weight.

All of this. Also, it's all relative to the state.

Sort of. DC's cut off is usually the highest along with that of 3 or 4 states, often NY, NJ, MA. This year, DC only has 2 Nat Merit scholarship semifinalists, both from Wilson. There have been years when DC had 3 or 4 from Walls alone, with others at BASIS and Latin. Depressing. Meanwhile, Sidwell Friends has 16.

Have they published school by school results? Could you please point to link?

Why wouldn't it be? It's the Governor’s Regional School for Northern Virginia, which means it gather the very best students from FXX, Arlington, Loudoun, Prince William etc...
It would have been a bust if it did not.

I thought there was some suggestion that the NMSC just follows a policy of setting the cutoff for DC the same as the highest for any state (this year, New Jersey, at 223). If so, it would just happen that the vast majority of kids in DC meeting the cutoff attend private schools.

Yes, this. The PP had no clue of what she was talking about

NY is hardly ever in the highest states. It is usually NJ, MA, MD. For a very long time it was always almost MD hence the reason some people thought DC was lumped with MD.

Did Sidwell get 16 this year also or was that for last year?

I think it may be from last year, as I know JR had two last year and I have not seen an announcement for 2023 NMSQ for Washington , DC yet.

They are not "allocated" and it's not a zero-sum game. If, say, Wilson JR kids exceeded the cut-off for DC, then they get the nod no matter how many hit this benchmark. Sidwell isn't taking anything from an attendee of McKinley Tech

No. DC has the highest cut off year after year, often

Are you daft? Of course DC has the highest cut off year after year because DC is given the cut-off of the state(s) with the highest cut-off. That was stated several times in this thread.
My gosh

The kid is obviously not at TJ. Reading comprehension?

Of course they are not at TJ because I live in DC and this is the DC schools forum.
Idiot.

Are you semi-illiterate? No one is talking about you or your kid.

This year for DC:

SWW 6
Sidwell 5
Georgetown Day 4
Gonzaga 3
St. Albans 3
National Cathedral 2
St. Anselm’s 2
Basis 1
Maret 1
WIS 1
Whittle 1
Wilson (J-R) 1

Impressive results for DC public schools:

Public: 8
Private: 22

Walls beat every private school in the DC—kudos to them!

And, for privates, Gonzaga bested NCS and SAAS.

I do not have a kid at SWW. I do not know the ins and outs of the National Merit process (and I don't care). But anytime SWW (or any public school) is on a list above DGS, Sidwell and others then that is a feather in their cap.

Way to go SWW.
