Any update on high school magent application ?

I don't understand. Is the Cogat being administered again or are they looking at the old one?

It looks to me like all applications are due 11/4. Our school has said NOTHING about it. What should we be doing if we want to apply to magnets and know more about the dcc?

There is a high school preview presentation coming up on September 21. Then there a bunch of program-specific information sessions scheduled for late September/October.

They aren't using the CogAT this year. They said this publicly and its been on their website for months. Please stop asking.

I believe it's the preppers/enrichers who are embittered when there formula doesn't necessarily add up to an admission. Because they can manipulate this variable. It should determine who is "deserving, " and if there kid doesn't get in, they'll say the program is "watered down."

I would love to see more seats/programs to nurture all the kids who woul bloom in them and keep the outraged parents at bay.

I agree. There needs to be more seats; however, those prepper parents make this stuff so toxic.

I wholeheartedly agree that 1) there need to be more seats and not just more seats at existing programs but more programs so that the students don’t have to travel so far (This kind of transportation burden does a disservice to gifted children and their families —
And
2) That admissions shouldn’t be something that can be manipulated by highly motivated parents, which not all gifted students have. I heartily approve of getting underprivileged kids into the gifted programs. But there should not be a scarcity of spots because that discriminates against other gifted kids who need and desire challenging programs. Hence the need for more seats. The regular home school programs cannot serve those kids as well under the existing practices, but MCPS should change things so that they could do so.

PP here. Yeah, the current state is like a Black Friday sale on quality education. The "motivated" parents stampeding to make sure their kid gets in! I sure hope MCPS will continue to invest in these programs w/ more seats. They have expanded HGCs (now called something else) at elem level. And they have developed some HS programs (like Kennedy).

Also, I must say, my #2 is at Wheaton, and we have been delighted with the teaching quality all around, not just magnet classes. That's really what it's all about -- teaching quality and attracting/keeping good teachers. My kids' schools (Blair and Wheaton) have done this pretty well. I would say that is more important for the kids than specific programs. But, the programs/labels will pacify the parents more.
