Why doesn't ACPS teach spelling in elementary?

Think this is a result of the nation-wide end of the love affair with Lucy Caulkins. As phonics starts to return, so should spelling. Again, not unique to ACPS. Everyone drank the Lucy kool-aid.

Just waiting for the complaints when your above level kids starts complaining about doing phonics for 90 minutes a day and you realize they actually haven't read a real book the whole year. Sadly, I am not exaggerating....

No because the phonics lessons in Really Great Reading are generally 30 minutes. Plus, the above average kids will still benefit because it will help there spelling. I am more concerned whether the teachers are adequately trained to provide the lessons.

In terms of writing, it is like teaching/asking a kid to run without knowing how to walk.

Exactly. Hard to build a proper foundation in writing without grammar and spelling.

If we can't even count on schools to teach spelling or math, what the hell are we parking them there for 7 hours a day for?
