This gets old year after year, 3+ nights a week for practices and games. |

Y'all are crazy, I freaking love tuna pasta dishes.
and they can keep well if you use the right recipe |

What I did when we were in that stage was pack a bento-style container with veggies and hummus or black bean dip or similar (I’d mix up the veggies and dips week to week but kept the dip filling vs. like salsa). This would be for the down time in the car—the container fits easily on their lap and veggies don’t leave crumbs, and the fact that it’s served cold meant they could eat it on the way home if they weren’t hungry before practice.
Then I would pack something hot in the sandwich-adjacent category. A favorite was chicken quesadillas (you can batch-prep and then just reheat), or sandwiches where the bread is corn bread waffles and the filling is chicken tenders, or they liked pitas with falafel and hummus and tomatoes (prep the filling in advance). |

Love these sandwich adjacent ideas! Cornbread waffles and chicken will definitely go over well, thank you!
Also, I’m team tuna noodle, but unfortunately my kids are not. And for the person who asked how/why do this long practice, it’s actually two slightly overlapping practices (for two different age/gender kids). It’s DC suburb to suburb driving, but the drive is 30 min at 3pm and 10pm and 1 hour plus at rush hour. Luckily there’s good wifi to finish my work day and then a gym I can use to workout during the long wait. Just need to sort out dinners (and takeout isn’t in the budget). |
My kids have never expressed that! |
Me too but it's not the kind of thing you want to eat from your lap. |
I did this for years as I had kids in multiple ages doing club swimming. I ended up getting fat because I was driving and eating fast food with the kids. REGRETS! |

Can you get a cooler that insulates for to keep things warm or do you need cool only foods?
https://stayfitmom.com/italian-baguette-sandwiches/ these are great. remove the tomatoes before wrapping and add them later. I would look into single serve macro meals in containers and prep them, heat them up before you leave and find something that will keep them warm like an insulated bag. https://huntingwaterfalls.com/how-to-keep-food-hot-while-traveling/ Not stopping requires either cold foods kept cold or hot foods kept hot and each require planning. I would plan on soup nights in a thermos with bread and raw veggies or fruit, some type of sandwich for night 2, and casserole for night 3. |
We buy a lot of the frozen food from trader joes. My teenagers come home from school and can cook it for themselves. You can also look at skinnytaste.com they have good ideas. |
you put it in a container and bring a fork. Very easy to eat before practice. I would avoid dairy close to practice. |
| I feel like a slacker. We go out for fast casual on heavy sports nights - typically I bring DS a snack for the ride there (bagel with spread, for example) then I (or we, depending on schedules) go to dinner during practice and get him something to go for the ride home. |
+1 lol |
LOL me too. Major regret. Major. |
Good idea. Costco has frozen burritos that I like (chicken or breakfast type with eggs) Costco also has a premade chicken enchilada in the refrigerated aisle. Try cutting that up and putting into tortillas as a burrito. If you want to make from scratch, then use the same ingredients. |

Chicken Biryani in a thermos. Simple, delicious and easy.
Lasagna - Italian or Mexican Asian or Mexican rice bowls. |
