Because his test scores will be higher if you just read interesting books to him and let him play with friends. Really.

10 mins of math worksheet problems nightly start for my first grader next week. got the sense it was required, rather than optional.

One of my kids teachers assigned a lot of work in 1st or K. It was mostly just busy work that they wouldn't have benefited from doing so we disregarded it.

Agree; rather than torture them with pointless assignments, we tried to do other fun activities that were educational with the time it would've taken from doing these worksheets. I felt they got more out of it and there was less friction.

My kid's school (not public) doesn't give homework until 7th grade. Thank God! The kids do just fine without it and it's a lot less stress and conflict in the house. What a waste of time! My kid learns good work habits through swimming and their instrument, and those have much more benefits for them.

Its not optional.

Of course it it. You think your child will flunk first grade and be kept back? I threw it out and sent the kids outside to play.

BUT BUT it will be on the permanent record! Okay, I'm kidding. I did the same as you when we got that nonsense. My kid didn't need to do it. We'd prefer to spend time doing worthwhile activities, not silly worksheets.

My DD's teacher did the collect a few things in a bag to bring in to talk about it as homework so the kids could get to know each other better - this was the first week.

Now they are supposed to do 1-2 pages of the Eureka math book - which is more of a review because I think they do the same book/worksheets at school, so it's just additional practice of what they have already done. And in both K and 1st the teachers say to read for 15 minutes. All of it is optional.

Reading DCUM and having served on PTA I understand more and more why teachers are quitting and don’t want to come back.
