AG Racine suing Michael Saylor and MicroStrategy

Normally when a tax agency is skeptical of your taxes, they do something known in the biz as an "audit" where they force you to prove you paid the right amount. They don't normally just ask the AG to sue you in court.

Well then dime them out. Sounds like there's tip $ in it for you.

Major cities don't have the resources and manpower to audit people for local taxes.

So DC has *billions* of dollars for bike lanes -- we even have people whose entire job it is to clean bike lanes of debris -- but we dont have money to hire tax examiners? Seems a little hard to believe.

If he was actually living here for more than half the year, it seems like a whole lot of people would know and it wouldn't take ten years to figure out. And he has a home in Miami Beach. I like D.C. and all but most people would consider living in Miami Beach to be far preferable to living here, and not simply because Florida doesnt have an income tax.

Anyone who tries this is urged to carefully record how much time they spend in each jurisdiction.

This is from Racine's press release:

The complaint includes detailed allegations that Saylor was physically present in DC for most of each year, despite claiming to be a Florida resident—including allegations detailing flight logs from MicroStrategy’s corporate jet and location-tagged social media posts. The whistleblowers’ complaint also alleges that Saylor openly bragged to friends and acquaintances about evading DC taxes and encouraged others to follow his example.

Doesnt even really pass the laugh test, does it? I mean, do we really think Saylor encourages other people to avoid DC taxes? What? This is Racine's MO. File big showy lawsuits against famous people and then watch them go down in flames. He should focus less on filing frivolous lawsuits against Mark Zuckerberg or Vladimir Putin or whoever else he reads about in the paper and do things that actually matter to DC residents.

You seem to be reaching to make this lawsuit appear silly. Rich people talk a lot about avoiding taxes and look to Florida not only for lack of state income tax but also the unlimited homestead exemption on expensive houses. This lawsuit is obvious because a blowhard like Saylor running his mouth about tax evasion will eventually have someone blow the whistle.

Is someone using homestead exemption on a Florida home public record?

What a nothingburger.

Overzealous progressive council and AG have to go after 'ThE BilLioNAIrEs!!!' with flimsy charges that Sailor will hire a good accounting firm to absolutely own Racine anyway.

Meanwhile, the AG does nothing on the out of control crime in DC and is allowing so many violent miscreants to walk the streets with no punishment because in the city govt's perverted world view it is some kind of progressive/restorative justice.

If you are registered to vote in Florida, that is public record. That’s how people figured out that the cop who killed George Floyd was avoiding Minnesota taxes. I’m not sure about Florida, but it is clear in DC and Maryland public records if you are declaring a house your personal residence or not.

Sounds like a lot of anxious posters are faking FL residency. Lots of teeth gnashing.

I will be shocked if Saylor ends up owing DC anything. The rules around residency and taxes are obvious and anyone with enough money to own more than one house should have an accountant or financial adviser able to make sure they don't run afoul of the rules. It's not hard.

USAO does not handle juvenile crime. OAG does.

This press release was made the same day a 15-year old shot two other juveniles outside of school.

Nah, anyone worth any significant amount of money with multiple residencies that includes areas like FL, TX, etc. know the rules before hand and have their accountants document everything in case it comes down to something like this. A complete waste of taxpayers' time going after Saylor, because you can bet your behind he has his accountants already doing all of this work all year long to show he has primary residence in FL. He won't owe DC squat. It's a progressive political theater. Meanwhile, so many shootings in DC and juvenile crime is outta control.
