Camp Timbertops in the Poconos - absolutely lovely, mostly Jewish (with emphasis on -ish in that I'm not sure they have any religious practices), and they have a bus from the DC area. Genuinely warm and wonderful place. Brother camp is Lake Owego, where our son goes, but we know many very happy families at Timbertops who return year after year.

This is true. We love our camp (where I went/worked as a kid) but it’s 6 hours away. That’s a lot of driving for the 3 times we need to be there. We could take them to NYC and put them on the bus but haven’t yet.

Exactly! The first year it was a fun adventure, but I'm over it now.

But the camps further away may have cooler weather, which can help. And a lot of camps will meet your kids at the Portland ME or Albany airport
