A friend had their kid with an early September birthday take the test to enter K early and from what they said it assumes the kid had learned the entirety of K content and material almost perfectly. It sounded like they want kids to fail. I would definitely get more info.

Yeah, MCPS does not really want kids to start early, and the test is designed to weed out most kids.

Our school refused to test.

The 6 week thing also seems designed to have as few kids as possible continue in 1st grade... I know other parents who opted to keep their kids in K even if they were recommended to move to 1st, because they had already moved schools and didn't want more disruption. I don't think they were offered at test. Just seems kinda silly... 6 weeks seems way too long to evaluate whether someone should be in K or 1st...

There isn’t a test for first grade. It’s observation only.

It is really unfair to the kids which is why many wait till second if the school offers first grade.

Why is the cutoff September 1st and not December 31st?

Because Maryland is different than NY?

It used to be further back and years ago they changed it. They have an option to test in 9/1-10/15 kids but some schools don't allow testing and even if you test and your child is ready, they will deny you as they don't have to give you a reason why. So, your only option is to go private or homeschool.

What if you want to redshirt your child after private K, even if they meet the cutoff requirement?
