Why beach trip is so popular?

I love beach resorts in Florida and the Caribbean. Very relaxing, great service, perhaps an excursion or two for snorkeling, kayaking, etc.

The thought of renting a house for a week, cooking, cleaning the sheets at the end and shlepping everything to the beach and back everyday, even if oceanfront, is not appealing to me. The houses at the nicer beaches around here are a few thousand or even higher, so not even that cheap though you do save on flights.

Who cares, just go on the vacation you like. It doesn't matter what other people are doing.

I grew up in a beach town and love the ocean.

My kids love the beach. We’ve been all over the world and given the choice, they prefer a week at the beach.

I don’t think it’s “cultural” thing, PP, so much as a regional one. I grew up in the Midwest and no one took beach trips every year. Some did do lake houses, though.

I wouldn’t call it regional, it is geographic.

We live in DC area and don’t got to local beaches, and we spend roughly 1/3 of the year on a beach.

+1

No one is holding a gun to your head, OP. If you are not accustomed to the beach, don't go.

We go to the beach every weekend and I love that it’s so peaceful and relaxing. But I’d never vacation at the beach for a week. I want to do new things and see places. I’m the sort of person who needs a vacation to recover from my vacations. Like hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon or glaciers in Alaska. And I don’t like to cram beach stuff into a week - like we minigolf and visit amusement parks on random days instead of packing it into beach week. People are different. That’s all.

My kids haven’t been all over the world, but they’ve been pretty lucky with travel- Europe, Caribbean a couple times, Disney, most of the cool parks out west, and they always look forward to the beach. OBX or Ocean City, they love it. I like beach vacations too. As mentioned, they’re great because there’s not much planning…it’s easy and truly relaxing.

What!? Lol. We’ve gone to the beach 3 times this summer. Never bored.

Op here. It is interesting that some pp mention that it could be cultural things, and I happen to be Asian. I think I like to tour and cram things within a trip as sightseeing new things, going to hot tourist places & taking pictures. My kids like pool, and they are not beach fan for a week. I am not sure if it is due to their ages or just personal prederences, they are likely to get bored.

Just like this summer vacation, day 1 explores city & take water taxi, day 2 goes to a kid museum, day 3 goes to amusement park in another state, day 4 goes to a farm & explore around town , day 5 goes a kid museum and head back home. We stay at 3 different hotels that have pool if they want to play in water. It add up and not cheap with all those hotels/tickets/admission/meals, but kids have fun. I am exhausted because I did all planning and make sure everything is alright. Unless I have other family to join me, or else I don't think beach for a week is for me unless it is all inclusive resorts with planned activities or cruises.

That’s sounds f’ing exhausting and not how I’d want to spend a summer vacation. It is cultural in some parts of the US to take a downtime vacation in the summer.

You should do what you and your family enjoy. For a lot of people that's the beach. But even then people do it different ways. I hate the sun and burn quickly - I am not going to lay out on a towel. I love the water and my kids want to swim so we do two hours in the ocean in the morning, hang out inside at the hotel during the sunniest hours, and go back out for another two hours in the pool in the afternoon. We stay at one hotel only and it's right on the water so it's easy. We bring breakfast and lunch food and do oatmeal and sandwiches, and go out for dinner. Do all that four days in a row and we're done, but the kids have a great time. If we want more we can add an amusement park or water park.

Before kids my vacations involved foreign travel or hiking, but the kids really love the beach, and it's easy enough for us to do that now. My 5 year old loved it so much that she remembers every detail from last year when she was 4, and she was really excited to come back and do it all again only better because she's bigger now. I expect when they are older we will do more interesting vacations, but this is reasonably easy (though not cheap) and not too exhausting.

Do you set a timer??

With 3 young kids, traveling around to various destinations, in and out of cars, going to busy/crowded places is stressful and not fun. It would be a constant fight to keep everyone together, safe, and orderly and would be exhausting for everyone.

Beach ends up being a lot easier, likely because it’s built around one outdoor activity. I have 3 boys ages 1-5 so I imagine some of this is age related; they would choose digging in sand over a museum every day of the week.
