Are you kidding me? You have Connecticut Ave. to the east, Rockville Pike to the west, White Flint Mall is essentially IN Kensington, and Montgomery Mall is maybe 10 minutes away.

Westfield Mall (formerly Wheaton Plaza)??

very close to Kensington but according to some posters, not a DCUM "favorite"

I go all the time!

No, I meant Westfield Montgomery Mall, on Democracy. But there's Wheaton Plaza too. I think a new Costco is going in there.

I go to Wheaton Plaza frequently as well, and I'm in Chevy Chase. There is a Costco going in there, the Planning Board and County Council just approved a couple of things that pretty much makes it a given.

There is housing stock in the middle - $500 - $600K range - smaller homes that are in the Town of Kensington and other neighborhoods in the WJ cluster.

When we were looking I was told by a guy I know who grew up in Kensington to look for houses in the Walter Johnson district and stay away from Einstein HS (where he went and was nicknamed Crimestein).

Here's a con -

you are outside the beltway and that does make a difference to traffic. It'll be worse from Kensington.

Not if you know the secret back roads! I zip out of Kensington in a.m.

What more do you want to know? I live in CCV and am happy to answer some questions if you have particular things on your mind. We're very happy there, though my commute to downtown has steadily worsened since we moved in a number of years ago. We're zoned for BCC (no school-age kids, so no personal experiences), love the Saturday farmers' market, can do all of our shopping very close to home, are close to Bethesda and Wheaton for huge restaurant selections, and many other things that make it a good place for us to live.

I live in NWDC, near Sibley Hospital. First, let me say that I think Kensignton is a very pretty, great nieghborhood. These are my personal observation/generalizations based on families I personaly know well who live in Kensington. First, the ones with older kids (at least elementary aged) are ALL Catholic and send their kids to Catholic schools like Mater Dei, Little Flower, etc... They all have at least 3 kids if not more. These families live in newer houses that tend to be rather large with nice lots. The Dads have sucessful careers but the moms mostly stay at home. I know these families mostly through sport teams (lacrosse, football, basketball) and they are very sports-oriented families. They are also, each and everyone, very family oriented. No social climbers, show-boaty types, and really nice friendly folks. The families I know who have younger children are more varied in their backgrounds and interests. They live in older, very small brick homes that are down the street and around the corner from the other families. They have less money, the moms work and they are planning on using the local elementary. Again though, super nice people that are open and friendly to others. As a genralization, I think if someone is steering you away from that area, or looks down their nose at Kensington, it is probably a "snob appeal" thing. Kensington has a more varied socio-economic population, more of a middle-class feel perhaps than Bethesda or Chevy Chase, and some people are turned off by that. If you care about that then look elsewhere. I would say that, as someone who shares many of the values as the families I know who there have, the only reason I would not choose the area is that as a non-Catholic, I might feel a bit left out as they are all very active in Catholic youth leagues and their churches. I also like to be closer in to the city for my job and other conveniences.

It's in Maryland...that's what is wrong!

Huh, didn't know that there was a large Catholic population. Not that it is an issue for me, but didn't know it.

I take the back ways but when you need to get on the beltway it is still harder than coming from CC, hence the cheaper prices for being "outside" the beltway. Location, baby.

I think PP is overstating the Catholic thing. Around Holy Redeemer, yes. Around greater Kensington, not necessarily.

I'm the PP who grew up in Chevy Chase and now lives in Kensington. I can get on the Beltway much quicker from Kensington than I could from Chevy Chase. You must not know the "right" back ways...and I'm not tellin'!

impossible. Then why is Kensington so much cheaper than very similar parts of CC?
