We are entering middle school. 5th grade seemed great hearing from old classmates, many are in the top math level, they read 4 novels this year in class at Innovation, and DHMS is said to have a great principle. Great Schools says test scores are up. |
So much is wrong with that. The top math level is irrelevant. You can get As in the top math level, do well on the SOL and still not have a good foundation. If you stay in APS you will be fine. But, things start taking a nosedive when kids progress through MS-HS. Grade inflation and glossing over, pushing ahead is the norm. Your kid can be one of 1/2 the graduating class that is a valedictorian ![]() |
Why don't you wait until the enrollment report comes out in October?
This conversation at this point is 100% speculative. |
Not speculative but anecdotal. |
hahaha. APS secondary teacher here. this PP is spot on |
How do you know SOL scores are up? I know my kids' scores, but the state hasn't published overall scores yet. |
The families I know who left for Congressional and Gesher are not coming back. |
Was wondering that, too. Nobody has seen the district-wide scores yet. And “top math group” just means the top of that group of kids. Haven’t all APS elementaries moved to skills based report cards now? There’s no metric for anything above “meeting the standard.” |
I think many families will continue private school enrollment or homeschooling for the long-term (ourselves included).
Some may return to public if it’s a financial challenge to keep paying private school tuition costs. |
Our DD best friend met with math specialist and was promoted to highest math track. There definitely is some math differentiation . |
Congressional? That’s hardly an academically rigorous option. Why not just go FCPS? |
What is Gesher? Congo is not worth the premium over APS. |

NEVER heard of this. |
We know 5 that left, none going back. |
