Why you should let your young kid play tackle football

What kind of psycho would want their elementary aged child doing Oklahoma drills ? Even Jim Harbaugh recommended young kids play soccer and then switch to football in high school.

Seriously. The NFL should be illegal.

Seriously?? The NFL will NEVER be illegal.

Nah. There are plenty of sports. We’ll skip the purposely signing up for CTE, thanks.

Ha. So we've been hearing for the last 20 years or so at least. FYIW, at my kids' DC private school, football is bigger than ever.

And those young men coming out of the DC private school system are just beacons of morality and gentleness

Sorry your kid didn't get in. He'll be OK.

NP. No, he will be better - which is why we turned it down.

Yeah, right.

I know your self-esteem is pathetically wrapped up in the school your child attended (not you or “we”), but seriously, dial it down. You’re embarrassing yourself.

Archie Manning didn't let his boys (Cooper, Payton, and Eli) play until they were in 9th grade.

Let your kids mature and figure it out. Football isn't a mind game of individuals on a team stage like baseball is. If they are built to play, they will pick it up quickly enough.

Oklahoma drills screams 3 Year Letterman from Twitter.

Hey dude, go refinance your waterbed and leave the corner units at Pigeon Forge for the rest of us.

If they aren’t brain damaged when they start playing this game, they will be when they are done. Honestly it is a tedious sport to watch, very stoppy-starty, and a dangerous one to play. No fitness benefits- just look at the fat f@cks who play it. There is no upside to it.

So don’t let your kids play. OP was pointing out that many youth leagues match them by weight and it’s really strict cut offs. There were more safety protocols and fewer injuries on my son’s football teams through the years than my daughter’s soccer or basketball teams.

Your kids don’t have to play any sports. Some of us saw the benefits of youth tackle and it was great for our kids. It’s not for everyone. There are sports I refused to let my kids try for my own personal reasons.

Like what, if not football?

Anonymous wrote:If you have a elementary or junior high son who really wants to try tackle football, let him or her. Even, and especially, if they are small. Find a youth program that matches kids by size, not age. That way, they will play only against kids their own size. Tackling at that age isn't intense; the kids just aren't that fast or strong. If you wait until kids are "bigger" or in high school, they will have to play against kids of all sizes and the risk of injury increases immensely, if they ever see playing time.

If you don't let your kid play tackle football when they are young, they may never get a chance to play at all.

I am ok with this outcome but thanks!

My sons also played youth football. They are on the small side so no way they could have safely played in high school, but they love the sport. I’m glad they had the chance to play themselves.

They both wanted to play hockey. I would not even let them try it, because I knew if they loved it the practices would be a problem with location and our work schedule. This is an example of what I meant by personal reasons. There were a couple of other sports where I said no too, mostly because we couldn’t make it work with schedules. There are all sorts of reasons parents don’t let kids play sports. You don’t have to be so angry at others that make different choices.

Do some research- CTE is not just a problem with football. It’s pervasive in soccer, hockey, basketball, (lacrosse - TBD). Do you really not let your kids play any of those sports?

How many of those players are admitted (and on financial aid) to play football? It's getting nearly impossible for a lot of schools to field teams otherwise. Participation in tackle football has absolutely collapsed among children with educated and well off parents. Flag football, on the other hand, is taking off in a major way.
