Thoughts on new HS?

He’ll be starting MS in 2023 and I’m totally fine with Hardy for him. But what about the new HS? Will the Hardy kids peel off and not attend? Will it be chaotic? Too hard to get to from Glover Park? One of my hopes is for him to have some friendships that stay together from
MS to HS, but if all the Hardy families are going to opt out, then I may make a different plan.
I promise you this won't be an issue. My kid traveled from east of the river to Hardy and then to Wilson. You just do what you have to do.

OP here. I just checked Google maps and it looks like an easy walk from Glover Park. Also potentially much nicer for a kid to just stroll to school at 8am instead of having to get on a bus at 7:30 or whatever in MoCo.

Truly stellar? You are way more optimistic than I am.
I predict it will be a hot mess at least for the first 2-3 years and then hopefully it will settle down and be ok.

If you don’t understand the demographics or the recent historical trends, then I guess your long-term
Prediction could be right. It you do understand them, on the other hand, your prediction seems foolish.

OP what are your exceptions for your child regarding his academic experience? I too am hoping I can send my child to Hardy and the new HS. I am watching the developing situation closely.

PP I meant expectations not exceptions.

Hello! Thanks for asking. My DS needs to be challenged with solid curriculum and expectations of academic achievement from his teachers. He's not the type to just "do extra math" on his own, know what I mean? But he is still very bright. I'm particularly interested in a strong writing curriculum for him. Personally less interested in math, but that's just me. Ideally, history and social studies that would be engaging and also give the opportunity to work with his peers to develop teamwork skills on projects. I also want a nice, friendly place with some after school activities. I don't think I have outsized expectations, and honestly, any of the options I am considering are likely going to meet my academic expectations (Deal-Wilson, Hardy- New HS, Sligo -Einstein, Takoma PK MS - Blair, Silver Creek - BCC)

Apply to St. Anselm’s 6-12 for boys. It is located in Brookland and meets each of the goals you highlighted.

You are not going to get writing instruction from DCPS. It's pretty horrific. Math can be quite good. Writing at Deal and Wilson is beyond bad.
I think perhaps you should explore the Maryland options you listed!

So I’ve heard. We’re already seeing that in 4th grade at a “top” DCPS elementary. It’s odd. The only focused writing work was PARCC prep.

… and maybe, just maybe, the new HS can emphasize writing?

If you want more writing emphasis, suggest IB as the core curriculum. I know the CWG is pushing that already, but it would help to have vocal community members writing that they want IB as the curriculum, specifically because of its greater emphasis on writing.

I think experiences can differ. At our DCPS NW elementary, we were extremely happy with the teachers and writing. Pushed our kiddo hard and their writing skills went from mediocre to quite good. And at Deal we found the social science teachers that our child had to be very good on writing and critical thinking. But that is just one family's experience with two kids.
