Does a free period in senior year look bad for colleges?

Sure. Name them. And where did he go?

Brown, Vanderbilt, Cornell. He went to Drexel.

I have heard of the first three, but not the last one.

My ds only took 6 classes his senior year. Got in everywhere he applied. He wasn't aiming for top 20 though.

Extremely interesting, and unlikely, choice... Quite possibly the only person ever to turn down those and go to Drexel.

Drexel may have offered money.

I wouldn't really rank Vanderblet higher in general, but honestly, aside from $$$, it also comes down to what you want to study.

Yes, Drexel offered more money but he's a very practical person and wanted the coops that Drexel offered. We visited Cornell in the spring after he was admitted and it was cold and gray and pretty depressing so that knocked it off the list. He liked Vanderbilt but felt like it was too southern and preppy and full of fraternities and sororities. He liked Brown but it was too expensive.

The info about Cornell and Vanderbilt could have been gleaned from a simple google search. I don't think you're genuine. Your posts reek of BS.

Well I have a PhD from Oxford University so I think I'm not an excessive hermit...

DD had a medical issue and junior and senior years she had a free class period during which she was a TA for a history teacher. When she felt well, she would go to the class, but the teacher rarely had anything for her to do. When she didn’t feel well, I would simply write a note and say she wasn’t feeling well and she was excused. She probably missed about 50% of the classes, but it wasn’t a problem because it wasn’t a course for credit. She ended up going to an Ivy.

How are colleges going to know if a student has a free period? The transcript doesn't have the student's actual schedule -- just the classes being taken.

Idiots.

Well if they list 5 classes when previously they listed 6 I'm sure the admissions folks aren't that idiotic when it comes to subtraction.

Colleges are looking at the courses being taken, not the ones not being taken.

I agree. They don’t care as long as the 5 classes are the core subjects (English, math, science, language, and social studies). They will see if you are missing one of those.
