Why can’t the state leave these sensitive topics for parents to teach their kids. I don’t want a government employee guiding my kids with their or the state sanctioned view on sexuality.

If you are concerned about this book having too much influence on your child, the solution is probably to have your kid read more than one book this summer? Then it will be just one book out of many.
Or, you could make a big fuss about it, and then your kid will really be interested!

Yet people want schools to educate children on manners, proper social behavior, and many other things beyond reading and math. But just not this--am I right?

I do think MCPS has gone very deep into many social justice/political topics in their choice of reading materials. As a contrast, I looked up the summer reading for incoming 6th graders in our old Brooklyn neighborhood. Much more innocuous than the mcps selections.

They don't even have to be innocuous. How about good books? These books are being assigned precisely because of their subject matter, not because they're well written or worth reading.

When i think of all the actual **literature** I read by the time I had graduated from MCPS, it just makes me want to cry. These assignments are a joke.

because too many don’t. Then their kids are the ones that are cruel to the kids that are different.

Parents only teaching their kids their own viewpoint is why we have so much hate and ignorance in our country. I applaud mcps for doing this. My 9yo read it in a day in June when the library had a bunch of Pride related books out. It was one book of many.

No, I teach my kids manners and proper social behavior. Focus on reading, writing, arithmetic and science. US lags other countries in these fields. We spend way too much time on topics better learned at home.

Agree with this. There are PLENTY of good options for this age group 10-12 years that would be appropriate.

Nobody is saying they need to ban LGBQT books or other controversial books. But putting them on the reading list and forcing kids to read them is not the way MCPS should be handling this.

Who is sropping your kid from readin these books? They don’t have to be on a ‘reading list’ for you to push them in your child.

Why do you feel the need to push these books onto ALL kids?

Oh, just wait. MS was terrible. They certainly don’t read any ‘literature’. The MS kids arely read any novels. But they do have the kids at our MS read ‘Stamped’ by Kendi.
