DS took a French placement test and was able to do well enough to go straight to French 2AB in 7th without taking French 1A or French 1B in 6th grade.

We are French and our kids go to MCPS. We toyed with the idea of skipping our oldest to French 4 or something, but decided against it. He just took AP French without taking any MCPS classes. To keep up their written French in a more culturally French environment, with textbooks approved by the French government and teachers with certifications from France, we enroll them in My French Classes, in the Bethesda St Jane de Chantal school on Saturdays:

They have non-native speaker classes as well.

There’s AP in middle school? I’d like to know what middle school offers AP classes.

^ The issue will be your child's schedule, OP. So late in the year, if you want to switch to a different class, which perhaps takes place at a different time of the day, they might not be able to switch all the other classes around. If you're thinking about it for next school year, then of course it's not a problem. You just take a placement test, and voila. The only issue is if the student takes a class that's only offered at the high school (Level 4 language, Algebra 2), in which case they need to take the bus for the first period of high school, then return to first period of middle school. They do this for languages and math classes, usually not for other classes, although my middle schooler could use a high school orchestra class!
