I told him $420k ($60k/person). We are a household of 7 with elder care responsibilities as well as our young children. Some call this the sandwich generation.

It depends on your expenses and your savings. I don’t think; of it as a per person thing since once you have housing, you are mainly adding food and a small uptick in utilities. Of course, with each child, you have to save more for college- but your retirement savings would be the same.
I call it the sandwich phase, as all generations go through it.
