It depends on your expenses and your savings. I don’t think; of it as a per person thing since once you have housing, you are mainly adding food and a small uptick in utilities. Of course, with each child, you have to save more for college- but your retirement savings would be the same.

I call it the sandwich phase, as all generations go through it.

Oh, and we have done well on a sub $200k HHI with a family of four.
