| It’s not that they don’t trust experts, they have a mega distrust of the establishment. That’s the pull of Trump. |
| It's so bizarre that they attack the people who worked hard, stayed in school, studied and got their advanced degrees as "elites" while literally worshipping guys like Trump who was a total screwup but was lucky enough to have inherited a multi billion dollar real estate empire from his dad - but wasn't able to make his own ventures go anywhere like Trump Steaks, Trump University and flop after flop. Likewise they go around parroting bowtie wearing silver spoon dweebs like Tucker Carlson, who grew up going to private schools in Switzerland, whose family is the heirs to the Swanson Food fortune. But sure, some guy who busted his ass and worked his way through college is the "elite." |
Boomers were the ones giving them out to their kids. |

Maga is made up of predominantly overweight, undereducated white people. Fox and other right wing outlets have conned them into believing that they smart and not washouts in life. So they need to pretend they’re not only smarter than they are - but smarter than everyone. Classic insecurity.
They’re also spoiled. Any inconvenience for the greater good of our country (taxes, masks, health policy, gun control) is blown up in their little minds to be a slight on them. These are not tough people. |
| A lot of reductive thinking on the MAGA side. Dumb people think everyone else is dumb. Smart people don't. |

It comes from overconfidence and living in a bubble where your assumptions are unchallenged by the cold splash of reality. The only cure is rigorous education or hard knocks.
I don't want to overgeneralize. This can apply to anyone. But it really seems to afflict males of mediocre intellect. I once found the "Lord, give me the confidence of a mediocre white man" coffee mugs off-putting, but I get it now. This particular demographic indeed suffers from overconfidence. |
It’s not about Trump. It’s about him pointing out the hypocrisy. Global warming: “TURN YOUR THERMOSTATS DOWN” they say. Then get caught with their’s cranked to 78. “He’s from Hawaii”. Private jet? “He/she is more important than you, so needs to fly private”. Telling us how oppressed and oppressive we are in the US when the countries they support enslave other people. Sending our hard-earned FINITE tax dollars to other nations while our own go hungry and live on the streets. Tell us we don’t have a right to our guns but they do because, again, they are more important than us so need protection. And as a hard example, jailing a 70+ year old Bodega worker in Rikers on high bail for stabbing a man with a past violent criminal record, who was beating the crap out of him. All caught on video, mind you, so we know the worker was not lying. It was only due to MAGA outrage that the Bodega worker was finally treated fairly by Democrats. |
Assuming this all is true, that Trump “points out hypocrisy,” how does one reconcile the enormous hypocrisy of Trump’s own life and behavior? The populism that he used to gin up his base is entirely at odds with his life, his behavior, and his choices. There is. I logic to being sick of hypocrisy but still supporting Trump. |
Yes, the GOP is all about workers' rights. /s |
| You have to know a lot to know what you don't know. And so those who haven't read deeply, gotten far in their education, experienced much in life, etc. don't realize the extent of their ignorance. |
But that's cutting off your nose to spite your face. I'm not going to take up smoking because some politicians/bureaucrats/authorities are telling me not to smoke while lighting a cigarette behind closed doors. I'll think they are stupid, but I'm not going to jeopardize my own health and well being because of their stupidity. Are MAGA people that manipulable? Do they all suffer from oppositional defiance disorder? Can we get them to change their behavior by telling them to do the opposite? |
I think it’s a strong strain among them, yes. |
The racial composition of the cultural war is not white vs non-white. It's white, se asian, indian vs black and majority of hispanics. Statisically I'd have more confidence in an asian doctor because of how hard they had to work to succeed in an academic system that actively discriminates against them on the basis of their race. |
