I always thought the principal's primary task was to yell at kids. Now(and perhaps always) it is more about administration and dealing with teachers. I don't think teaching in core subject is a requirement at all to be a principal today.

If that's true then op is just the typical pot stirrer. Are you sure this is the same person op is referencing?

I’ve known some PE teachers who were phenomenal leaders. In my district they take on a very people-facing role with duties and events so they know many families as well. They can be a great fit for admin.
