She finds something science magical, there's a cat, and in the end she gets to be a pilot. The cover had a lovely abstract design. I could swear it was called Cat's Cradle but google only has Vonnegut for that.
I had a childhood book that I could not remember that was very similar to #1. After looking around, I think it might be A Stitch in Time by Penelope Lively?
