| 3 and 4s from a certain grade. Maybe 3rd??? And you need to be nominated by a staff member. Plenty of kids in AAP and GE get this. |
I earlier posted the standards released by one FCPS ES for this award. These policies are the same as the ones at my ES, and they're likely the same as every single FCPS ES. I did post that it is entirely possible that they waived the SOL requirements due to the pandemic. The SOLs taken in 5th grade are what they use for eligibility. Last year the SOLs were optional, so they possibly didn't use them for this award. Next year, the criteria should return to standard operating procedure. Did your child earn pass advanced on either the reading or the math SOL taken in 5th grade? Did you opt out of SOLs last year? If the answer to both of these is no, they must be waiving the SOL requirement for this year. Also, weirdly enough, if you fail one 5th grade SOL and pass advance the other, you would qualify for the award according to the standards posted from that one FCPS ES. 490 Reading and 490 Math = No award. 350 Reading and 500 Math = Award! |
| Sounds like a pretty meaningless reward. |
| 25% of the kids in my son's lackluster (I have quite a high impression of it for local Level IV but people on this forum would say the school sucks) got this award. So I'm going to conclude the bar is quite low. Based on the demographics there is no way SOL was a criterion |
| Teacher here. This year SOL scores did not count. They just went by report card grades which is why there was a larger amount of Excellence Awards given than previous years. |
| Very high percentage of kids got it at my kid's school. Maybe around 98% of AAP and around 60-70% of Gen ed got it. It's meaningless. It's like a participation certificate. |
Is this for all schools? Why did the SOL scores not count this year? |
Because they’re last year’s SOL scores. The kids were tested on material that was “de-emphasized”, and lots of kids opted out. It’s |
| My child earned all As on their final report card and did not receive the award, but I know others at their school did. I have no idea what criteria their school used. |
I think due to pandemic. There were a lot of kids who got the excellence awards this year that wouldn’t have in a normal year. |
At our school we get a list of kids who are eligible for the Excellence Awards. We then decided who gets the achievement awards. |
| Our school announced the criteria used this year when announcing the recipients. It was all 3’s and 4’s on the Final grade report from 5th grade and all 3’s and 4’s for the first two grading periods of 5th grade. We are at a high-performing ES. It was easily 90+% of 125 kids. |
Does the principal have any say when it comes to this decision? |
Sounds arbitrary especially when compared to schools that don't do this. |
| It is very strange that parents posting here seem to know the private grades and SOL scores of an entire graduating class. |
