My friend is not wealthy, but middle class, and works as a nanny. She is French, slim, pretty, opinionated and families fall over themselves to hire her. No degree beyond high school, but I guess they go for the French swish. I'm French too, so I find this hilarious. |
I absolutely think it is the zip code. They are familiar with the neighborhood and know that if your daughter lives there, she or her family fit in with more affluent SES. |
I did notice my daughter has worked retail. Everyone same salary. Camp Counselor everyone same salary. Her IT job everyone roughly same salary.
But in the nanny world stuff like she speaks French, Award winning artist, rich town, college degree on deans list somehow folks will pay more. Why? She is literally doing babysitting. Is it bragging rights? Both rich women it seems one in Chevy Chase and one by Obama are actually SAHMs. She will go country club type thing with kids and her. Moms will be there. Is also very beautiful, well dressed, elegant Overall nice girl. But once again in the mall or her IT job who cares. I almost feel rich SAHM moms with the nanny country club are willing to pay more. Is it for the kids? The again I got invited a super rich beach club once and the “cabana boys” “valet parkers” looked like male models and the rich moms loved it. But in a nanny? Are the Chevy Chase moms like this. Not a single working mom offered her a job. Does it make them feel even richer having a “show nanny” I looked on care.com and seems like a thing. |
This is absolutely ridiculous. There are basically two demographics of ppl who offer nanny services. College/recent college kids who are local. Then there are career childcare providers, nanny’s included. Local college kids tend to mostly be wealthy because this area is pretty wealthy. You are reading way too much into this. Stop it |
Do you feel bad about your daughter being a babysitter, OP? It’s nice people are giving her a job. |
How much are they paying her? |
Show nannies in NYC get 180k a year, Xmas bonus and rent paid on their apartment
https://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/25/magazine/the-best-nanny-money-can-buy.html why it varies so much it is an experience thing and rich like the nanny all focuses on them. Interesting. |
$220k going rate San Fran for a top nanny

I see nannies in these cases almost like personal assistance. Most nannies and personal assistance do not make these amounts but there are very wealthy people who will pay very very well for a nanny or personal assistant that can meet their needs and has the background to do so. |
Assistants** |
The nanny rates have gone up significantly so a lot of Nannie’s are doing very well. My best friend is a nanny in Connecticut and is making $35/hr for two school aged kids. |
Not to mentioned entitled! |
I agree that COVID has driven rates up more than people realize. I have 2 kids under 5 and I’m paying a college student $35 an hour to watch them both this summer. |
I think the fact that this Nanny is confident + sure of herself is a huge plus here. She looks to be the kind of person that makes no apologies for who she is and what she believes. She isn’t a sell-out - she is not going to let anyone take advantage of her and I think her attitude garners respect. So many Nannies are afraid to speak up if they are unhappy or mistreated. They may deal w/job creep, working long hrs or feel underpaid but will stay silent because they do not want to lose their job. Or even a good possible reference. Sad but so true unfortunately. A Nanny who speaks up for herself & demands respect likely is more appealing to most families. |
Several posters on this thread do not know the difference between 'she' and 'her.' And they are denigrating some nannies? |
