Can a Virginia private withhold report cards for missing books?

Yes.

All schools hold report cards if there is a balance due.

Is it legal? Of course it’s legal. I’m sure you signed a contract saying you were responsible for any outstanding fees. If you don’t like the school policies, vote with your feet. You’re not obligated to send your kid there.

You should receive the report card and then of course expect a bill for those religious cards (have no idea what they are) that are lost. Next year can you just deny playing with those cards?

OP, here. Above poster, you are right. It feels manipulative. That’s my issue with this. It’s never been the policy in prior years and it feels a bit like a money grab at the end of the year. There was a recent school function during school hours where students were asked to pay. My child hasn’t lost any books. We are missing 2 out 30 paper Bible cards. These Bible cards are flimsy paper and we’re given to my child in a used condition. And if I’ve already paid for our books at the beginning of the year, why am I paying again? This is not about a missing library book.

The school needs to buy those flimsy paper cards from the vendor, and they're going to need new sets of them.

When you borrow anything in life you have an obligation to return it in as good or better condition than when you borrowed it. Teach your kid that lesson, not how to get angry when you don’t fulfill your obligations.

OP, if you can afford private school, they assume you can also afford to replace the cards or repay for replacement.

Being able to afford the cards has nothing to do with my initial question. It’s apparent that the school is strapped for cash and if threatening to hold report cards over 2 missing disposable Bible cards is the look they want then so be it.

Again, you’re CHOOSING this. No one is forcing you to attend.

They’re bluffing. Just fight back and refuse to pay. Grubby money grab from a school that is probably teaching things out of step from the rest of the world. Grow a spine and stand up to them. And do you really need a report card? No. I’ve learned that schools like this have weak people in the admissions office. They will break and probably cry with the slightest pushback.

Nope. Our private in MD does not. Two different departments.

Actually, we have chosen not to enroll our three children next year. We are enrolled at another private school.

That explains their letter to you, then. Pay up or they won't release your children's grades to the new school.

Then what’s the problem? Just walk away.

Sigh. And we wonder how the Trumps of the world are born. “Why should I pay?” “How can they do this to me?” “The votes (Bible cards) were bogus anyway.” Grow up OP and teach your children better.
