Does your nanny also babysit for you on weekends?

I still don’t trust anyone but our nanny and my baby will freak out if she wakes up and there’s a stranger. Nanny can also handle the bath, bed routine and get the pumped milk bottle the perfect temperature. Just couldn’t happen with an occasional sitter for a child this young.

You convinced youself of this but it isn’t true. I found some very capable occasional sitters for my infant twins. You are lucky your nanny is willing to give uo her Friday nights.

No, honestly I just wouldn’t go out. Our nanny is the only person outside of DH and myself I trust with my baby just yet. Maybe later I will be comfortable but I am not now.

NP I totally get it and am the same way. If our nanny ever leaves then we will find a new one and get used to them. But I will never subject my children to rando babysitters.

We do this once a month and pay cash the OT. She told us that cash works for her better.

Yes! Last night was the first time. Nanny asked if she could and we said yes even though she’s more expensive than our usual babysitter. It worked out brilliantly for all of us! First, the kids were thrilled to see nanny. Second, our nanny can get them to bed happily (we go out after they’re asleep with occasional sitters) so we could get to dinner and a movie at a reasonable hour. Third, nanny got some extra time with our 3.5 year old after she put the toddler to bed and he’s been talking about it all morning! Fourth, nanny was happy to make the extra money.

It's also not legal...I don't understand why otherwise law abiding employers think that you can pay cash once you hit overtime.

Because it’s really no big deal. Our nanny likes the weekend time added to her salary but when we pay outside sitters, we pay cash. I don’t think anyone who pays the occasional cash job to a nanny is going to get busted.

Again, I remind you of Zoe Baird and Kimba Wood both had to withdraw frm consideration for Attorney General in Clinton Administration because of nanny pay problems. You are cheating your nanny as well as your country.

I think we’ll all be okay.

20 years from now, or whenever she wants to get Social security, it will be considerably less than what it would have been if all of her income had been reported. The wage and labor law for domestic employees does not give either of you the option of paying in cash.

WTF are you talking about? Our nanny is paid legally for every hour she works. Buzz off!

+1 no big deal.

They pay me in cash, which I suggested myself, since I really don’t need time and a half for a weekend care date in which I’ll see the kids awake for tops 2 hours or less. I’m aware this isn’t legal but not worried about it at all.

It's not illegal for you; it's illegal for them. For you it is all upside if later on you decided you should have been paid right. Then you get penalty pay too!

Sorry, not all upside, I forgot that your unreported pay won't count for your social security income later, so the downside to taking payment under the table is that you get less back in your retirement years. Of course, it is also a risk to you if you aren't paying taxes on it.
