anyone know what covid news is coming home today?

Report back OP! I'm curious what it is, we are at a different ES but haven't heard about any changes (although I doubt our principal would send a heads-up email before one with the actual changes so maybe something is still forthcoming).

Cases are increasing. Why would there be fewer or lesser restrictions?

True cases are increasing but hospitalizations and deaths are not. The science is showing that a five versus 10 day quarantine doesn’t make much of a difference. Obviously none of us want our children to get Covid! But we’re no longer living in a close the schools/require masks environment. Arlington and Fairfax just reduced their isolation time, makes sense other school systems would follow suit.

Exactly.

And let’s not forget that ZERO kids age 0-17 have died of Covid in Montgomery County. There is no justification for putting any restrictions on our kids at all at this point.

Let’s go back to making public policy decisions based on actual data and not just CNN-stoked fear and emotion.

What does zero deaths in the county have to do with the discussion. You need new talking points.

If we are looking at actual data it makes sense to go back to masking and distancing as numbers are up.

OP, what did they change at Rosemary Hills? Do you have a feel for how many cases they have?

If you followed the thread, you'd see that we're talking about a shift in public health policy. We/USA/Schools aren't trying to keep cases down. We're trying to keep hospitalizations and deaths down. Distancing and masking is not going to be mandated again. We're in a different phase, we know much more about what actually works and what precautions have very little returns. Schools have been advised to no longer have 10 day quarantine/isolation periods. The harm to kids being out that long outweighs the very small risk of transmitting COVID 5 days past infection.

Because we are talking about whether we need to reimpose restrictions on kids. It is very relevant to note the numbers of deaths in kids, due to Covid, when we are decisions whether to impose restrictions/mandates ON KIDS in schools.

If you do not see that connection, then you clearly should not even be involved in this discussion as you have no understanding of public health policy.

Like the other PP said, we need to balance the harm to kids of importing restrictions/mandates on kids against the risk to those kids. And it is clear that there is no good reason to impose any restrictions/mandates on our kids at this point.

We got an email from Silver Creek MS that cases are increasing. 12 cases in the last two weeks, which makes sense to me since people just came back from spring break and many traveled. They’re not changing anything except in classrooms or activities with 3+ cases. I’m not sure what they’re doing, but the email says they have taken “additional mitigation strategies” in those cases.

Cases increasing at Viers Mill ES. So much oh so that before care closed for a week. Our neighbor’s kindergartner got COVID for a second time last week. She just had it at the end of February.

If hospitalizations go up significantly, then that’s something we may have to consider. But that hasn’t happened. The vaccines are doing what we need them to do.

OP again. The letter we received was class specific. Because more than three kids in my child’s class have tested positive, they are:
1. Asking that everyone test
2. All wearing masks for the next ten days
3. Non-vaccinated kids must stay home and quarantine for five days. Vaccinated, asymptomatic kids can stay in school, masked. But again - see #1 - they asked everyone to test.

Sent home tests and N95 masks.

that’s pretty silly that they’re distinguishing between vaccinated/unvaccinated, given that the vaccine doesn’t strongly protect against transmissible infection.

Sure. But that’s been the MCPS policy all along.

I’ll be a conspiracy theorist and say that far-left MoCo has an interest in incentivizing vaccination, especially since - in general - those that are unvaccinated have parents who are least able to stay at home with them for the quarantine period.

So a vaccinated kid that tests positive can keep coming to school as long they wear a mask? How are they enforcing what kind of mask and proper fit?

Wait, what? So vaccinated kids can just come back to school the next day even if they tested positive? I thought individuals are pretty contagious the first few days, even if asymptomatic.

That makes no sense. We know that vaccinated individuals can still catch and transmit Covid.

No- vaccinated kids that test negative, per number one, and are not showing any symptoms of Covid.
