Baby Carriers/Do they really kill your back?

OP here: This is all very helpful, thank you. For those who use the Ergo, did you buy it online? I noticed a couple of boutique type places sell it in the DC metro area, but not places like Target or Babies R Us etc. Did you try it on before you bought it? Thanks!

I got my Ergo online. Maybe Ebay.

One thing to keep in mind, OP -- you can't carry baby forward facing in front with an Ergo. My first absolutely LOVED riding that way in the Bjorn, which we used until he was 10 mos/18 lbs. Definitely couldn't do it anymore after that. For #2, I bought a Moby, which you also can do a front, forward-facing carry with; I like it a lot so far. And I'm using the Bjorn while #2 is an infant and finding it very comfortable. He's probably about 9.5 lbs now. I imagine it will be fine until he's 13-15 lbs.

That said, I've heard great things about the Ergo, so if you don't mind not being able to do a front-facing forward carry, sounds like a great choice.

PP here -- to clarify, I don't put my 9.5 lb infant in the Bjorn forward facing. You can't do that in any carrier until baby has head control....

I bought the ergo at Buy Buy baby in Rockville. They only had 1 box so we just bought that. We were lucky they happened to have the color we wanted. I recently noticed that they have a great selection of ergos (lots of colors!) at the Wiggle Room (consignment store) in Bethesda. I may be mistaken but I believe that ergos are not eligible for the buy buy baby coupon anyway, I think that the Wiggle Room is a better place to shop for one.

Wiggle Room sells new ergos for the same amount as the online vendors: $92. But if you buy it there, you save on shipping. And, they might let you try it on, I don't know.

If you know you want one, I'd try ebay. These things are incredibly sturdy, so I'd feel good about getting one second-hand.

I bought my Ergo online. I have bought carriers (and maybe the Ergo) from Attached To Baby - great service.

I LOVE my Ergo. Got it online, but have seen it at Buy Buy Baby (in Springfield) as pp mentioned. Ergo sells an infant insert so you can use it from birth. I also have a New Native that I used when ds was first born and just wanted to sleep all day snuggled close to me.

15:37 here- just wanted to add that we had a bjorn until ds was 4 months old and about 15 lbs. It was so hard on our shoulders. That's what prompted the Ergo purchase.
