Why is my kid zoned for the further away school?

This is the answer.

We just moved. Seems like most kids in the neighborhood go to one elementary school yet we are assigned to a different one that’s actually further away. Is this common? We would like him to go to the school with most of the neighborhood kids. I’m assuming they won’t make any changes or approve any requests to switch assigned school?

Yes, it is impossible to assign every house to the closest school. They would have to find perfectly located land for every school and ensure that neighborhoods were built perfectly around every school. MoCo is fairly wealthy but the money for this does not grow on trees.

If so, your K-2 school may be the further one with the 3-5 being the closer one. If you want to go to a K-5 school, you should ask for it. For example there are people living close to PineCrest ES (3-5) who are bussed to Montgomery Knolls ES (K-2) even though Highland View ES is closer to them.
I personally know several families zoned for Montgomery Knolls who were able to transfer to Highland View ES.

That makes no sense when HVES is overcapacity and PCES and MKES have empty seats.

I'm told if the school you want to go is less crowded and the one your zoned for is overcrowded you have a much better chance of getting the COSA through

Are you sure you aren’t talking about New Hampshire Estates and Oakview? I’m not sure that HVES is really closer to Pinecrest than MKES is.

I think they were referring to Forrest Knolls since FKES is also overcrowded and parts of FKES boundaries were redrawn to MKES/Pine Crest but some families chose to COSA back to FKES (which kind of defeats the puprose of changing the boundaries to alleviate overcrowding

Now that the new boundary has taken effect, FKES is no longer overcrowded.

Let's remember that Montgomery county has not been able to redraw boundaries in decades because Nice UMC Parents who scream about housing values every time there's a move to redo boundaries. I mean nobody is racist but God forbid their kid to go to a school that is not x% white and Asian. Will somebody please think of the test scores and the great school ratings?
