Yes. Divided into morning and afternoon in pretty much all weather here (from Chicago and DC is always balmy to us).
There was this thing about kids needed to be outside 1000 hours a year which is probably where the three hours a day came from. We do three hours easy. |
| Sure. Our nanny takes the toddler out for at least two hours in the morning and 4 year old gets two 1.5 hours outside at preschool. Then nanny takes both kids to a park from 2:30 to 4. On weekends DS and I have the kids out pretty much all day except the little ones nap. |
| Yes, at least three hours a day. We have a tiny backyard we gave over to our young kids with a mud kitchen, sand box, water table and outdoor easel and my 2 and 3.5 yr olds can stay out there all day if we let them. |
| No. I'm a SAHM with a chronic illness. We don't have a yard. Toddler will start outdoor preschool at 3, but until then will be mostly inside with me. |
| Between 3 & 5 hours a day when it's nice out. When it's rainy or prohibitively hot, less so (the heat more affects whoever is taking her out to play than her, but we're people too!). |
| Same. At least three hours a day and closer to five now that the weather is warmer. On horrific weather days we’ve happily stayed inside but my kids slept terribly those days. My kids need outdoor time. |
| My cousin does three hours a day (1000 hours a year) with her toddler twins on the freezing planes of Kansas so I figured I could do it here. Walking with my newborn was good for both of us! |
| Is this another thing mom's are supposed to obsess about? I missed the memo. I have no idea because it isn't the same daily, I don't track it. |
~1000 hours per year |
Can anyone point me to robust, peer reviewed research that supports this recommendation? |
Yes, there wasn't enough to think about I guess. |
I think it’s just a suggestion to make our kids healthier. |
|
Two hours in the morning and an hour or more after nap is pretty routine for my toddler and baby. I see the same parents and their kids out the same times so I know we aren’t weird.

How so? |

I can’t remember. Look I agree this thread is feeling over the top. Counting the minutes isn’t the point. But there is plenty to stay that outdoor time is great for kids, I’m not sure that is really in question. |
