New Diagnosis of Dyslexia

Don't rely on APS for real help. APS may give the student some pull-out hours but it's not what you need. Not even close.

There is no replacement for a 1:1 tutor using an OG program. As many times a week as you can handle. It won't be forever but it will be for now.

It sucks but there is no way around it. Private tutoring and lots of it.

We use the Barton Reading and Spelling program. It has worked great! It is OG based, but uses methods that Lindamood Bell uses without the crazy price tag. We use a virtual tutor twice a week and my child has made amazing progress. Check out their website and call and speak with their office. They are very helpful!

+1. Generally speaking the order of intervention is:

1. All About Reading at home.

2. An Orton-Gillingham trained tutor - and there are multiple reputable O-G influenced programs.

3. Take out another mortgage and try Lindamood-Bell. LB is *incredibly* expensive, extremely time-consuming, and should be regarded as a last ditch option for the profoundly dyslexic, for whom, incredibly, it can work.

A kid who is failing tests, but the school doesn't regard as failing badly enough to justify intervention, sounds like someone at step 1 or step 2 to me.

All About Reading is based on Orton Gillingham but generally not as in depth and structured as kids with Dyslexia need. Wilson Reading System and Barton Reading and Spelling are more appropriate. Phonographix and Lindamood Bell are much more expensive to access and teach on your own, btu are the other core interventions available.

Another good source of background information is this Lab School lecture series video by Rebecca Resnik. It's called, The Science of Reading: How Instruction Re-Wires the Brain.
