How Much Do You Give Annually to Charity?

Since you are not giving to charity, I assume you are giving to help candidates get elected who will make this happen?

Why would I give money to candidates who have already been purchased by corporate interests?

200K HHI, probably about 5K/yr between charitable donations and campaign contributions, which I see as pretty equivalent (my efforts to change society for the better) although of course the IRS doesn’t agree.

Hhi about 230k give about 35k to charity. Most of that is automatic deductions to our church and a couple organizations. No view it just like the college fund contribution.

DP. Posts like these are not helpful. The OP asked for the amount that you give annually to a 503(c) org, not your opinion on what you think is charity.

Stay on point.

Many churches expect if not require that members "donate." The coercive element to it renders it not "charity." The question should be "how much do you voluntarily and without any coercion do you give to charity?"

Yeah, I have a friend who gives every sunday just in case there's heaven and hell. I don't say anything but sure don't consider it charity.

HHI $450k. We only gave $3k last year. It was pathetic. FWIW, church can mean many things. We went to one of the most liberal churches in DC, a Christian universalist church that did tons of missions for the poor and unhoused. So many charitable works happen through donations to churches, temples, and synagogues.

I give 10% of my gross income (increase monthly donations every time I get a raise). The part of that goes through a church (a small part) goes directly to a free breakfast program for our local community. I used to volunteer with the program before kids but I can’t get a baby sitter for 5am on Sunday morning so I now donate instead.

I agree that redistribution of wealth should be a societal policy driven by the government but until that time comes, the food banks and other charities get a chunk of my pay check.

Would you consider giving to your college scholarship fund? Or World Central Kitchen?

This "government should do everything" mentality is selfish.

Charity? I’d not characterize my kids private and public school as a charity. We donate about 12k to each divided equally between the 2 schools.

All other charity does not make it on our tax form. We help my sister heavily.

This is awesome. We make a bit less than you, and only give about $6500 a year. Half of that to our church, and the rest given as automatic monthly payments to Maryland Food Bank and four other charities we support. If you’re gonna give, consider giving as a monthly automatic donation. For one thing, they can use the money more efficiently if they know they can budget based on it.

Giving to your church isn't particularly generous. It only means you give to people who think like you do. It doesn't mean you're giving to anyone or anything in need.

+1. Giving to your tax-exempt church isn't charity, it's you trying to buy your way into heaven.
