MAP-R

I'm surprised to hear about reading groups in later elementary. Have three kids who went through MCPS and our school did not have reading groups in the traditional sense after 3rd. In 4th they did have a group doing enriched curriculum and other classes doing less complex books, and in 5th everyone was together reading the same books.

How are these tests used in High Schools? If a freshman student gets a 236 what does that mean? Are these scores related to what courses they are able to sign up for next year?

Nothing. It means nothing in HS.

A large discrepancy is always a red flag.

If there is a consistent discrepancy between scores and class performance, then it points to a learning disability or another issue.

My son with inattentive ADHD always scored much higher on tests than on classwork, because he could focus on the test better than he could focus in a distracted class environment.

That's very low for high school. Schools do not take MAP scores into account, but they do consider previous courses for certain subjects that have prerequisites. So your child needs to have passed Algebra 1 before they can take certain science courses.

It means nothing in MS or HS, IME.

If you are interested in one of the competitive HS programs it means something

I was stunned by the candor.

Similar experience here. Teacher told my son and I that she was "surprised" my son was selected. He would also score high on MAP-R but she apparently never looked at it. He was in the lowest group with the ESOL students prior. True story.

I pointed a similar situation out to DC's teacher and they just told me I wasn't qualified to make that assessment. I remember thinking I spend time with the kid unlike her. Anyway, later when a different teacher did their assessment the following year they discovered DC was reading 12 levels higher than what the previous teacher had believed. My suspicions were confirmed.
