Could you share the reason? DC is interested but has a few concerns, maybe they are the same ones your family member didn't enjoy? |
I don’t know the PP’s answer, but I’ll just point out that Claremont McKenna is really small, like 1200 students. Great fos some, but it’s not for everyone. |
It's in a larger setting with over 8000 students. Not your usual small school |
I'm PP who asked to share the reason not happy. I agree that the larger setting with a robust culture of communicating cross-school events and a policy of open invitations across the schools makes a huge difference (that's the same for all 5 of the schools - CMC is the 2nd largest!). Still curious what the family member didn't like about CMC. |
| My 11th grade DD had it on her list and the college counselor suggested removing it. Suggested she would not have a chance at admission. Very difficult to get into. |
I understand, but I’ve talked with kids who’ve gone there. It’s still small for roommates, casual connections in dining halls, clubs, people you meet in class, etc. Personally I love the concept, but I’ve talked with kids who’ve gone ther and for whom it’s been a tough adjustment. That’s just what they tell me. Great for some. It’s just not for everyone. |

I'm a CMC grad. I got a great education. I actually think it gets discussed a fair amount on these boards. I'm a little torqued at CMC right now b/c they didn't admit my nephew despite the fact that he had great credentials (grades, scores, sports) and multiple alumni relatives- so I tend to think the statement that its really difficult to get into is true. (And I don't think it was as true when I was a student there, my nephew has better grades than I did in HS).
I liked the size, I liked seeing familiar faces in the dining hall, in classes etc. Yes, the 5C does add benefits so it is not so small. |
Also, it’s a long drive after the flight. |
But do you hear the same for other 5C schools, like Pomona? Trying to understand whether CMC is particularly tough for some to adjust to or whether that's a blanket statement for 5Cs. |
fly into Ontario- its much closer than LAX. (I'm assuming you are thinking LAX with the statement its a long drive after the flight.) |
CMC is more homogenous than Pomona so that can make it feel smaller. CMC kids also tend to stick to CMC because they trend more conservative than students at the other schools--again, making it feel smaller. Just an observation as an alumni from one of the colleges. |

Kid at Pomona - no adjustment issues with them or their friends. They fly into Ontario Airport on Southwest, but have flown on Jet Blue, United, and American. All require layovers from the east coast except Jet Blue to NYC. |
Pomona (1800) is that much bigger. I’ve heard it from kids at CMC and Scripps, which are both small. Don’t know about the others. I’m not trying to be critical. I think that CMC offers a fabulous education. I was just responding to the post about the kid who didn’t like for a possible reason why SOME kids have a difficult adjustment there. Great opportunity for the right kids. |
But then you have to do connecting flights. Options are fewer going in to Ontario. I do LAX from the east coast. East coast kids had no interest due to the travel issues. The traffic out there is worse than here -and that’s saying a lot! |

The schools don’t intermingle as much as you think.
The town is very small. Not much there. |
