Be Gentle DD Dropped Organic Chem

I was a Chem major who struggled with the first semester of orgo (my concentration was Physical chem). The first semester of orgo is absolutely brutal.

And there's no reason for her to spend the summer retaking the class. Instead, she should find an internship or job (or class) related to something she's interested in.

She’s thinking of maybe public health which requires OCHEM 1 but no further CHEM.

I got A’s in all of my other major classes, so totally disagree with PPs who say she should change her major because of this. What is she interested in? Some biology fields don’t really use organic that much. The summer school approach is a good one- I did that and found it much easier to do well when that was the only thing I needed to focus on. Good luck!

Thank you PP. thinking if she doesn’t decide to give up on STEM all together that she’ll take it the second half of the summer and she can go to Khan and prepare the first half.

Not snark. Those SAT scores look like a lawyer's.

Why not choose a major based on passion and abilities? Not sure why it's alway$ about $$$.

I think public health is a great idea.

It will be ok. These things happen. There will always be challenges. Good luck.

Data analytics and econometrics or biostatistics are what’s important for Public Health.

Hi, OP. I was similar to your DD, except I sucked at history and did better in science and math. The best thing I did was slow down and just take the basics to figure out what I enjoyed. I found that I loved math-based science above everything else, and then things went up from there. Give her some space too figure it out.

God forbid someone try something hard to see if they’re good at it.

My freshman DD has completely changed her mind about her major after hating the intro class. I encouraged her to try things she might be interested in and not to worry too much about GPA. It is ok to find out what you don't want to do on your way to finding a passionn.

I’m confused. Is she taking organic chem as a freshman? That is probably a bad idea especially if she didn’t do AP Chem
