Some things to think about when advocating for harsh sentences: Most offenders do not re-offend. Many offenders spend much more time in prison than what they are sentenced to because when going through release (called re-entry from the prisoner’s POV) there are extremely strict laws on where an offender can live and with whom they live when they are released. These strict laws often means it takes years to be released.

And that is a problem exactly how?

NP. I think the issue is more complicated. There are two issues at play - conviction and sentencing, which is one issue, and being on the sex offender registry, which is the other. The latter has proven to be ineffective. There is a great "You're Wrong About" podcast outlining the issues, and it has this accompanying Huffington Post article:

"These laws are passed with good intentions,” Levenson said, “but they’re based on myths about sex offenses and they don’t keep people from reoffending. Community safety is important, but we need evidence-based policies that allow offenders to reintegrate into society. All we’re doing now is putting people in a position where they have nothing to lose.”

Again, I just think this is a very complicated and not as easy as PP suggested. But in terms of conviction and sentencing, throw the damn book at them. The Josh Duggars of the world need to be locked up. He DID reoffend, so it's not like it NEVER happens. Who's going to want to be the one to gamble on that??

Hmm, I would love to see a study on religious pedophiles and recidivism. Religious leaders (priests, deacons) and Duggar all seem to reoffend.

More victims for the GOP pedophiles. It’s a fetus fetish anyway.

Yep. For a few years there, it seemed like there was a Republican - specifically someone who was an elected Republican, was working for an elected Republican or directly on behalf of the GOP or RNC - being charged with sexual violence against a child every few months.

Why are Republicans so quiet on this thread? I thought it was all about “save the children”? Why do you not care about these people in your party, frequently being protected by your party?

GOP & pedophilia, GOP & abortion, GOP & corruption, GOP & racism... the list goes on.

21st-century Republicans are nothing more than a collection of liars and hypocrites, desperately wielding Projection like it's some sort of Holy Shield.
