It never threatened the existing NATO members.
Ukraine didn’t listen.
Now it is trying to guilt trip western nations into making suicidal decisions just like the ukraine did for years
It’s all good and well to talk about freedom of choice for small countries dependent on their humongous neighbors, but realpolitik just doesn’t work that way!

Putin's been saying for years that Ukrainians dont exist and Ukraine is not a real country. This has nothing to do with NATO. It's just a bald botoxed narcissistic no chin greedy midget having a tantrum. Nothing but a pathetic ridiculous loser trying to puff himself up and feel important because of his inadequacies.

And the narrative being told by Russian state media was evolved from we need to "liberate" Ukraine to we need to "liquidate" it.

Some pro-Kremlin commentators in Russia have taken the call for Ukraine’s “denazification” to conclude that the country should be effectively destroyed. “Ukraine, as history has shown, is unviable as a national state, and attempts to ‘build’ one logically lead to Nazism,” pundit Timofei Sergeitsev wrote in a column for state newswire Ria Novosti on Sunday.

He called for Ukraine to cease to exist as a state, its elite to be “liquidated” and added that “the social swamp which actively and passively supports it must undergo the hardships of war and digest the experience as a historical lesson and atonement”.

Ummm..... " fearing Nato " doesn't give one license to enter Ukrainian villages with one consistent tactic: tie all the village people up, shoot them in the head and push them into a ditch an d bury them

That's Pol Pot back at it in the 21st century

So what if NATO is on Russia's border? NATO is also on the border of other non-NATO countries like Austria, Sweden, Switzerland, Finland. Do they feel threatened by NATO? No. Why not? Because they aren't a threat to NATO. NATO is only a threat to Russia because Russia has made itself a threat to NATO.

Russia has a long history of genocides. NATO has nothing to with it.

Well I'm in favor of cutting Austria and India while we're at it.
