Covid Protocols in daycare/preschool

Anonymous
I am a preschool/child care center owner and I firmly believe a lot of these places just use COVID as an excuse to keep parents out of the building. Being transparent means you always have to be on your game and a lot of places are frankly just babysitting with teachers on their phones and they don't want parents to see that because they want to keep being lazy.

In my opinion they have until fall and then this won't be tolerated anymore regardless of the vaccine status for the vaccine for under 5s. I don't think another school year will start with all these protocols because I think even the crazy Covid people will be the minority at that point and most parents won't tolerate it anymore. This is ridiculous.

I'm in VA in Loudoun.

Ours requires parents to wear masks inside for pickup and drop off.

Kids don't have to wear masks outside. Kids do have to wear masks inside in some classes. Some classes are fuller than others and can't space out.

Don't forget the lazy parents who are happy to drop off/pick up at the front door rather than taking their child to their class.

+1 Our daycare dropped all protocols except requiring masks for any adults in the building.

+2, also in NoVA.
Fortunately, Virginia never mandated mask wearing for children younger than 5, and our daycare followed those protocols, so masks were never required for the toddlers and little kids. All adults in the building are still masked.

- Ours is still doing Rapid tests weekly, temp checks at the door, masks indoor and outdoor, and no parents inside the building, ever. -- Is this standard?

Why are parents not pushing back on this? It's been over 2 years. If parents keep letting this continue it will literally never end. It's so completely dumb and does nothing to help with Covid. Nothing.

A few loud voices have taken over the conversation at our daycare.

In VA it is illegal for a childcare provider or daycare to not allow parents into the building. It is explicitly stated in all the communication from the state regarding COVID

Where does it say this?

IME, a lot of parents around here gave bought in to the narrative that these kids need to be “protected” until they can be vaccinated (whether that vaccine e will be effective is another story). Ours lets us in the building now but we can’t go in the classrooms (which is ok with me, we still see the teachers but less drama with drop off/pickup). Masks are no longer required but something like 90% of the kids and all the teachers still wear them. Even in the older “4s” room where all the kids have now turned 5.

I think for a lot of kids these processes work better as they avoid prolonged drop offs hat make things harder for them. Unfortunately for us the strict rules about parents going in are really problematic due to some special needs that DD has. We have worked it out with our current provider but we'd love to change providers to be closer to our new home, and can't because none will allow this and it means such a transition would be harmful to DD. I am fine with a lot of these rules but I really feel public health authorities need to explicitly state that special needs (a documented delay or diagnosed condition) warrant exceptions.

Interesting. I wish Maryland would do the same. We are in MoCo where the needs of young children are at the absolute bottom of the list of priorities.

As a reminder, Virginia law states that parents or guardians cannot be prohibited from entering a child care facility when their child is present under Section 22.1-289.054. Providers may recommend or require parents or guardians to maintain a certain distance and/or wear masks while picking up or dropping off their children or visiting the facility.

Basically none? Masks are optional. They are still not mixing groups / classrooms, but I think that will end soon.

Well as much as I’d like to meet DS’s daycare friends, drop off and pick up is so much faster now than it used to be pre-COVID. I’m okay with not being allowed in the building. Plus I suspect that all the little 2 and 3 year olds are running around without masks inside and it gives them an opportunity to mask up before walking g them to the door. Gotta keep up appearances. I know they are careful to have kids wear masks outside because they had an enforcement issue/reprimand with that last year. Temp checks ended a long time ago and we never had rapids.

Masks inside, PCR testing for symptoms, testing for travel. But some people want to put masks back on in surges, if they ever take them off inside. These people are never going to let this go and it’s exhausting and stressful.

None where I live. I can’t believe parents are still going along with this charade.

Temperature checks at the door, this annoying health survey you fill out every morning, parents can go in the day care but not in the classroom. Vaccines required for everyone ages 5+ who enters the building (parents, older siblings you bring with you. This includes 5 year olds in the day care.) Staff is required to be boosted. Masks are optional for students, parents, and teachers. You need a negative covid test (at home fine) to return after you've been out sick for any reason. Not sure what the current quarantine policies are; we've never had any issues in our class.
