DP. What do you think are the differences in pronunciation? I would pronounce it the same way in either language: cah-meal.

I love it, OP!

Is there more than one pronunciation besides "kah-meel"?

There is no distinct English "l" sound in the French pronunciation.

?? back at you.

I mean, you can do it that way, if you want. I've known people to make this choice, and it comes with eyerolls. You may or may not care. It just is.

PS: I like the name! I've seen two families get irritated because "people don't pronounce it correctly" for them, given that they push a French style, and sure. But it was predictable.

"French is Ca - mee - ya"

Isn't it "Ca- mee" ? I only hear 2 syllables.

Love it. It was on our short list.

I prefer Millie as the nickname over Cami.

There may be variations. It's definitely different than the common English pronunciation.

I mean if you have to say it with a really strong French accent, sure, but in some cases "Ll" is pronounced [ l ] after i -- about two dozen words (and their derivatives), including mille (thousand, un mille (mile), Gilles (boys name), etc. So while a French speaker may say Ca - mee -ya, an English speaker saying Ca- meel isn't wrong.

If you’re from a French speaking country, ok.

The prettiest girl in my grade school was Camille (Cami) and I’ve always loved that name.

+1. My Parisian former colleague Camille pronounced the ls. It rhymed with mille, rather than fille.
