UNC Wilmington

Wake is in a much different league than UNC W and UNC G. Not sure if you're just "checking out" or have genuine interest. Students at UNC G and UNC W will have a very different academic profile than Wake.

That was my first thought too. Is Wake Forest the "reach" school and the others are targets/safeties?

My cousin went to UNC Wilmington in the mid 2000s. She was also out of state (from Massachusetts) and while I don't know her stats, she's always come across as kind of ditsy. She loved UNC Wilmington, though!

I went to UNCW. Excellent Marine Biology program. Has a top notch research center and beautiful campus. Lots of internship opportunities as well. Variety of dorms to choose from. I loved it. I have three degrees (A BS from UNCW, masters from GMU, and specialist degrees from VA Tech); prepared me well for my career. Depends on what you want to major in and what program fits the needs of your child the most. My daughter is looking to major in mechanical engineering and UNCW was not on her radar (and that’s okay).
I would highly recommend taking a trip down there. See the campus, enjoy the downtown area and head to the beach.

True. Add Coastal Carolina, instead.

This is an even worse suggestion. Google for info about this school. NO.

Not sure your source, but the Wilmington Common Data Set indicates "state of residency" is considered, definitely not listed as Important or Very Important. The SAT profile is 1160-1310 and ACT Composite is 23-27.

Compare that to UNC-Chapel Hill. State of Residency is Very Important on their Common Data Set.

I think the difference is that NC-CH has so many more out of state apps that in state residency becomes a much more important factor there. But as an earlier poster said, the same in state/out of state percentage rules apply. The SAT and ACT numbers need to be broken down into in state vs out of state to know how they pertain to this issue. Only 18% of the students at UNC-W are out of state.

Yes, all the public universities are subject to "no more than 18% of enrollment" can be from out-of-state.

According to UNC-CH Common Data Set, the OOS undergrad enrollment is 13%. According to UNC-W Common Data Set, the OOS enrollment was 11% (gong from memory). I think the UNC-W % is lower because it doesn't have that massive draft like Chapel Hill. UNC-Charlotte and App State are both < 10% out of state.

However, I maintain that UNC-W isn't "pretty hard" for out of state students to be admitted to, as was stated. There isn't the out-of-state demand like for Chapel Hill or NC State. They aren't applying a different set of standards. My DC didn't apply to UNC-W but did apply to UNC-C with modest scores and got in.

How does he like Elon? DS and I are headed to Elon to tour in April.

What is so bad about Coastal Carolina? I know a few people who went there and did well and have good jobs.

He absolutely loves it. He was looking for a less cutthroat atmosphere with accessible professors who genuinely teach and he seems to have found it.

Great! We are excited to see it. Coming from MA and I know they have a lot of kids from the NE there.

Is UNCW a commuter school. My DD got in and we are trying to decide whether to take the time to visit. She had initially applied because of Marine Bio but now has switched majors.

Not at all. UNC-C is more of a commuter and pre-professional school. Kids from all over NC go to W to live at the beach.

However, kids from all over NC fail out of W b/c they are living at the beach. Just make sure your kid isn't at risk for that.

Ha ha! Thanks. Excellent point.

We visited UNC-W a few years ago with my oldest and did not like it as much as we thought we would. Campus was nice, but there's virtually nothing right outside the campus to walk to. Need to Uber/drive to the beach or downtown. I think each is about 5 miles away. Downtown Wilmington is nice (been there several times), but there are still a lot of panhandlers and such. It is getting built up, though, so hopefully it will improve. The campus also had little racial diversity that we saw. My daughter ended up not applying. We are in NC.
