Dance Recital looks like it's going to be 3-4+ hours long - is this normal?

I have never seen a place for siblings to hang out. I have seen many, many younger (and sometimes older) siblings have a rough time making it through dance recitals.

Get a babysitter.

For 3+ hours? Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooope.

Backstage is so fun for the littles. They have a great time with their classmates. It is something of a well contained party. Don't knock until you've tried it. Volunteer. It's fun.

Is this by posting about the Citydance recital? If so, I agree with the OP. It’s nuts.

I remember the school would have kids arrive in stages depending on when the performance was.

That doesn’t change the fact that these things are nightmares to sit through.

Their lower school recital is 1.5 hours, not 3. Then those kids/families can go home before the upper school starts. Many kids are in more than one piece.

But it’s also about the lead up to the recital. Classes cancelled for an entire weekend two months before the recital so that they can run through the entire dress rehearsal. Having to ferry your kid back and forth for 15 min slots if they are in several pieces. Like the winter show (Creatingbthe Magic), this thing just takes on a life of its own. All driven by the person at the top who seems to lose all sense of reality around these events. Pretty much done with the place and will head elsewhere next year.

Please don't come to my child's dance school. You sound awful. Don't be a Grinch on fun. Dance may not be for you. Too bad. It sounds like your daughter loves it.

Yes, you’re right, my kid (did I say daughter?!) loves it and is a serious dancer, which is why they’re upset about foregoing an entire Saturday of classes for this.

Hi, this is OP again, and yes, I am referring to the Citydance recital. I don't see how it can be anything less than 3 hours long based on the number of classes that will be performing, but since one poster seemed to think it would be about 90 minutes long, I'd love to hear how you know, so I can relax a little.

The previous dance school my child attended was geared toward little kids, and the recital was about 15-20 minutes long, very low key.

Also, I'm interested in a PP's statement that Citydance has it's own issues. Would you care to elaborate with specifics? The communications coming from the school this year are often confusing and weirdly adversarial (so much so that I have shared some of the choice emails with my friends for a laugh), but I was giving them the benefit of the doubt, since my child's teacher seems great, and the studio is very convenient to our home. Otherwise I don't know much about the school.

Kearing the Performa skills is more important sometimes

NP. Well there are 39 acts in the lower school Act I this year. I am skeptical about it being 90 minutes, accounting for the dancing and transitioning on/off stage- but hope you’re right. Will likely send one parent to represent our family and leave younger siblings at home.
