What is your daycare doing with the new CDC guidelines?

Nothing has changed so far. Still 10 day exposure quarantine, 7 day travel quarantine, temp checks, masks required for anyone over 2 and PCR required for any symptom including runny nose.

I’ve given up hope. We’re moving.

Holy cow. I can’t believe you have been dealing with this the whole time. It’s been months since my Alexandria daycare had such draconian rules (and even then, we never had a travel quarantine).

Mask optional (for kids) at my daycare.

DD is now in the 3s room and 14 of the 15 kids there mask (including her). Teachers are required to mask. In the photos from today it looks like all of the kids who regularly mask are still masking, so I don't think the CDC guidelines have had any impact on behavior. The kids really don't seem to care about it.

This is a really big assumption. Bear in mind children that are 3 probably don't remember anything before the pandemic. They can't express themselves the way you and I can. It's honestly infuriating to me when adults assume kids are "fine" with masking. You don't know that. I promise you.

+1. We thought our 2yo was fine seeing mostly masked (non-family) adults all the time, and she probably is, but that doesn't mean it's developmentally optimal. Even with her daycare not requiring masks and us not making her wear one except on flights, she sees a LOT of masked faces, and we were struck by how much more sociable and delighted she was with unmasked adults on a beach vacation in the South recently. It was enough of a difference that we really noticed how it changed her social interactions.

Yes that's been our experience with DD as well- she's more social and chatty with her mask off. I think it's better now, but for months once she moved to the 2s room the teachers said she DIDN'T TALK for the entire masked time of the day. When they took the masks off for meals (and later, outside, although that's back again) she'd be smiley and chatty and seemed to appreciate seeing the same of the other kids. I think she's naturally a bit shy, but this tells me the masks are altering her behavior.

Masking absolutely affects young kids. I view parents who think their kids are “fine” with masks as similar to the ones who think their kids are “fine” with hours of screen time every day. Just thoughtless, careless parents.

Good luck in this market.

I know. I can’t believe what parents do in their efforts to keep their children safe from a novel illness whose side effects are not yet known.
Idiots.

Alx daycare here too, agree for the most part but there is still a 10 day exposure quarantine for ours. Needs to end. These kids are not going to be vaxxed anytime soon and a lot of the exposures come from older siblings so it has ripple effects on multiple classes.

Can you explain to me what I'm missing if my kid does seem fine? Truly I have not seen any adverse impact. She speaks fine, plays with others fine, definitely recognizes emotions and is empathetic - what am I supposed to be looking for that I'm not seeing? I'm really asking.

I'm not saying this is true for every child. I feel for those who don't take well to the mask and I don't think we should force it if that's the case. But what am I being "careless" about?

Nothing yet. I asked. Hoping they make an update soon.

If you think a wet cloth mask worn below the nose for 2/8 hours she is at daycare is helping, then you’ve called through the looking glass.

Our daycare will still be "encouraging" masks for kids and teachers will be required to wear them. I wish our school would lift the requirement for kids and teachers and I cannot wait to get out of there in June.

At the Montgomery County Council session going on right now, Dr. Bridgers said they are currently still recommending masks in child care and are waiting until the CDC updates its specific child care guidance so that they can make their own guidance (???) so I'd expect any providers following DHHS guidance to keep masks for quite a while.

Oh my god. So pretty soon the only people under a mask mandate will be kids 2-5. Despite being in low risk. What the actual hell. If I could go back in time we would have moved to one of the many countries who never required masks for kids under six. I feel so naive for not realizing it was going to go on this long. We are so so so far removed from the rest of the world on how we have treated our children.

No change at our daycare in NoVA (eastern Loudoun). Masks optional for children under 5, as they have been throughout the pandemic.
Teachers/staff required to wear masks. Parents required to be masked when coming into the facility.
