It's still interesting somehow! Today, Daisy WOULD leave Tom for Jay. She would know the courts would protect her parental rights. And Jay's social capital would be just as good as Tom's old money society. She would be on the cover of Vogue, and start a fashion line. No losses for her. But we still wouldn't know who she really loves! |
That is interesting. |
Lol. I’m sending this thread link to my 11th grader right now! |
Today Jay would be a drug dealer. Tom would use that against her in court. |
No way would Daisy leave Tom in any era! She was a shallow, callous, vapid woman. She would never give up her status. |
| Daisy doesn’t love Tom or Gatsby! She only loves her daughter. She loves to be loved. And she’s a weak, pathetic creature. |
That would be an amazing novel - a retelling of the story in today's world. Nick could be out as gay, Daisy could run off with Gatsby. What else would be different? |
Wasps are like that, in general. Something I'm safely assuming Fitzgerald picked up on at Princeton. |
|
She loves Gatsby. But she loves Tom too. But it's not a particularly deep love with either.
There's a moment where Tom reminds her of some special intimate moments they shared and you remember that although Gatsby has been obsessing over her for the past 5 years, she's been spending that time building a marriage and domestic life with Tom. When push comes to shove, she's not willing to rock her world for what she views as a summer fling with an old flame. |
Please be more specific. You mean like a Sackler family member or Pfizer C-suite or some $100M+ medical doctor who owns a handful of pill mills in flyover country?
Or would be a new age casino/gambling mobster like Dave Portnoy and whoever the hell owns most of the shares of FanDuel and DraftKings online betting sites? |
That's the impression I remember having from the book. She's not going to 'risk it all' for the guy who just popped back into her life. No different than randomly bumping into an ex years after you broke up and they still look amazing and you get a flood of positive emotions. Sure, they look good and the memories are there, but 99.999% of people are not going to leave their current life for them. |
+1. Absolutely not. |
|
Who would be Tom's modern-day equivalent? A name we know, or quiet rich guy?
A modern-day Jay could be Leonardo DiCaprio himself. Came from nothing, clucky to get rich, party boy lifestyle. More suggestions, then let's choose betwern them! |
| Daisy seemed like a flake to me |
But the Laena soundtrack songs were gut wrenching. Will you still love me when I’m no longer young and beautiful? |
