Why are clothes so terrible now?

Their cuts haven't been working for me lately. I haven't been able to buy pants or skirts, just dresses.

I have to find a cocktail dress for an event and they are nonexistent. There is just nothing.

Maybe look at second hand places? I have an entire wardrobe of probably 250-350 dresses I haven't touched in 2 years ranging from high end suiting to cocktail dresses and thinking I should get rid of now that I am remote and moved to a tech firm where closed toed shoes are fancy. I think there are many in my position who are probably hoping to get a buck or two but mostly empty their closets of now nearly useless clothes.

The Real Real is great for cocktail dresses. I saw great dresses online at Neiman's and Saks. Not in the store.

Look at the real real. Lots of good options there for dresses. Or Rent the Runway.
