We like The Goldbergs.

The Wonder Years (the original) on Hulu
The Office
Doggie Howser (the original and the remake)

Merlin on Netflix (British show) is really great.

Mine that are that age also really liked Star Trek next generation.

Lost in space is good but it has a slow start.

Series of unfortunate events is really fun.

Mandorian is really good and Loki was really good, although I know you said you’re sick of super heroes (me too).

I feel like good place and office and some of the others suggested skew a little older. And I found avatar really irritating. The teen boy character is just too much. My kid’s tell me he gets better around season 3 or 4 and I was like “I don’t have the stamina for that.”

Meant to add to above list that I did like Dragon Prince.

I've spent half the pandemic binge watching with my now 13yo and his older brother. All time favorite show is The Middle. Also strong in the rotation were the Goldbergs (although it just got too unfunny over the years), Brooklyn 99, the Good Place, Kim's Convenience, Schitts Creek, Ted Lasso, Superstore. Lately he's been experimenting with Ghosts and the United States of Al, and American Housewife, which are all pretty bad.

Tried the West Wing, Parks & Rec, and the Office but they didn't work; may try them again. We also watched Veep for a while, because he's into politics, but I wish we hadn't because too much of the language was inappropriate for a kid that age.

Psych on Prime. My 12 year old just finished the whole series and guffawed his way through it. Great Buddy comedy with lots of PG jokes.

Malcolm in the Middle is another.

My son liked "I'm Sorry" on Netflix

Seriously, he loves Shark Tank

Brooklyn 99
Superstore
Avatar
Speechless
Degrassi High

Blown Away - glassblowing competition reality show
Queer Eye - the Japan episodes were especially cool

Some non-fiction favorites:

Bear Grylls shows (especially World's Toughest Race Fiji)

My kids loved BBC's Tudor Monastery Farm and Victorian Christmas (you can find these streaming on Amazon or YouTube, etc.). Next up, we'll try their other shows ...

Secrets of the Castle

Edwardian Farm

A lot of these are way too mature for my 11-year old. Seinfeld? So many sex jokes. The Office? the humor is kind of mean and not really funny for middle schoolers.

For cartoons, The Last Airbender rec is good, as is Kipo and the Wonderbeasts. Mine still likes silly shows like Inspector Gadget (not so awesome for parents) or classics like The Muppet Show (old and new, I think the older is better for parents). Fraggle Rock is also fun.

For real people, my 10-12 year old nieces love The Babysitters Club and The Worst Witch. My sons sometimes watch along and pretend they don't like those, but I'm pretty sure they do. Same with Full House and Fuller House.

No need to rush into adult programming.

My DS watches Babysitters Club, Big Shot, the new Doogie Howser. All have mostly female main characters. He wouldn’t turn them on himself but he enjoys them when my DD watches them. I am glad; it’s important for boys to not always see themselves at the center of stories.
