I caused a fender bender and can't find the other driver

OP here, I'm not sure about this because I am on the fence about whether our damage is worth filing with insurance. It's an older car and we may either pay for the body work out of pocket or just live with it. If I call insurance, we risk our rates going up. My main concern is doing right by the other driver.

Don't file, pay out of pocket or leave it.

It may be that this person thinks they were at fault and didn't want to involve the police for other reasons. Or even if they know you are at fault, they don't want the police involved.

My friend rear-ended someone and the car never stopped. My friend followed when they finally stopped, the person asked for it to be "dropped" and the cars fixed on their own. They didn't want the police called because they said they had an open warrant for FTA from parking tickets. They also didn't want to go through insurance to avoid price increases.

OP here, I've heard of similar stories. It is possible though that the other driver stopped somewhere else, on the other side of the highway, where I couldn't see. There just wasn't a good way to locate each other at a busy intersection.

This is he dumbest advice I’ve read on this site and that’s saying something. Only an idiot would call 911 for this.

Don't admit fault. They hit your rear bumper and you pulled over and they didn't. File a police report and call your insurance. From the way you described it, there is a good chance the other driver will be found at fault

OP here, yeah I called 311 and they were the exact right amount of concerned (not very much).

don’t do this. 911 is for emergencies. Call the non emergency number and explain the situation. They will know if the other driver called in. If they didn’t then you’re good to go. If they did then either the dispatcher or an officer will put u in contact with each other. No police report is needed. The Police don’t just do reports because you think you need one. ( 911 dispatcher)

OP here, I think I’m clearly at fault since I went straight, not realizing I was in a left turn only lane. So they were in the lane to my right and they turned left (they were in a straight or left lane) and they hit me because they expected I was turning.

It’s nice you are admitting fault but it’s really up to insurance to decide what to do. If you want to simply pay out of pocket to repair (or not repair) that’s your call.

I once hit someone my fault he kept going.

Maybe stolen, maybe no insurance. Maybe he was drunk. I literally drove in front of him and he plowed me on driver side. Enough to bend my frame and blow out window. My car still ran.

But he had literally a late model car. Who knows.

OP didn’t state where it happened but in DC 911 is the non emergency police line. You call 911 and state it’s not an emergency and they route you.

No, in DC 311 is the non-emergency line. 911 is only for emergencies, will they route you to a non emergency line if you call? Sure but you are taking up emergency resources when you do this.

OP I guarantee you it's something like this. The other person maybe didn't have a valid license, has a warrant, is in the country illegally, or maybe had something illegal in their car at the time of the accident.
