Sub requirements

Anonymous
OP, if you volunteer at your kid's school, then reach out to the principal and ask about the hiring system. At least in FCPS, some schools have dedicated subs that consist of parents that volunteer. Trust me, the principal wants to get you in as a sub and will do what they can to help the process.

Honestly my experience with children makes me more qualified to be a substitute than my years in college!

I looked up my alma mater, Virginia tech 2000, just to see what the process is. while it’s only $10 they only accept checks (unless you have a current student ID) so you have to write to them, send a check and then they will mail it to you. They do not do electronic transmission of transcripts. Very bizarre and a PITA.

Well, subbing is a PITA, so maybe jumping through this little hoop is a litmus test.

I volunteer at my kids’ schools, I have a graduate degree, and I worked as a sub elsewhere about 20 years ago. But I’m currently a SAH parent, so what I don’t have is two recent progressional reference letters.
For anyone else who has been out of the workforce for several years & works as a sub currently, how did you meet this requirement? Ask for new letters from long-ago employers? Ask for letters from people related to your volunteer work?

If school systems want subs, they need to modify or at least clarify this requirement.

I do not have anything substantive to add except to say “THANK YOU” to everyone who is trying to volunteer to be a sub. I hope the school systems clarify the requirements and make the hoop-jumping a little easier because what you are doing is wonderful.

I emailed HR and told them I didn’t have recent employment recs so would provide to personal character statements instead. They couldn’t have cared less.

Does that mean they ignored you completely or they jumped at the chance to hire you right away despite that?

I mean they gave no pushback and we’re fine with the personal recs. I was hired.
