Where can I get some gorgeous, but not terribly expensive flatware?

Seconding Yamazaki. They don't make our line anymore, but we've had it for 12 years and it's still going strong. It was 18/8

Agree with other posters that you want the 18/10 stainless flatware. If you like Oneida, choose an Heirloom pattern which they continue to produce for years. That way, you can add to/replace pieces as you need them. Otherwise, buy a full set for 12 with serveware. It also is a good idea to buy extra teaspoons and salad forks since these are also used for desserts.
